RE: Installing a SBC in a 1950 2dr pontiac

Have you thought about using a S10 front clip? Seems to be a affordable and popular conversion.

I done that in my '53 Bel-Air. 350 and a 4-gear Saginaw. Kept all stock where possible with minimal cutting and mods except the rear diff which came out of a '77 Omega.

I adapted to the original frame mounts just in case I wanted to go back stock. Used a '64 Impala fuel pedal to bolt to the firewall, adapted the cross shaft for the clutch, welded a perch on the trans cross member, and used a '91 Lumina coolant fan and reversed the wiring to use as a pusher to keep the rad in the original spot. So there is no fan on the engine itself. The stance of the car is still fairly even to what it was.

Then wired in the fan temperature sensor and relay to turn the fan automatically when she gets to the 106 Celsius range.

Like everyone else, if you want pics, I can snap a few.............

I was able to order motor mount plate and rubber mounting brackets direct fit for a 1950 chevy, also ordered painless harness, and voltage reducers for the gauges. So we are off to a good start! Should start posting pics next week.

I never did anything with my gauges in the '53, my '49 2-Ton or my '51 1-Ton. They all work absolutely fine. And it has been nearly 10 years now for all three.

Same with the harness, they are all their own except what I added. Besides, they are way thicker than the 12 volt systems of today and it retains that factory look!!!

When i did my 350 4 speed in my 53 chevy i just kept the original rad as it was in good shape.  never had a problem.  it was really simple like Vince says, new saddle mount, cut the firewall struts down a bit so it would sit fairly far back, rig up a crossmember pretty much bolt in a 57 chev rear end, stick on a drveshaft,  12 volt conversion for the ignition, lights, charging system,  and away ya go.  Oh yeah i had to run an electric fuel pump due to interference.  I kept the orginal front suspension/steering as it was in good shape too.

Stuck in a quadraphonic eight track and some purple sex lights under the dash and I was ready for action!

The one thing I didn't do that I should have was upgraded the brakes as the thing went a lot better than it stopped.  With the original springs etc it kind of handled like a pig in a swimming pool but that was all prt of the package, man.

Oh yeah had a lot of fun in that thing!

Nice pics 67Poncho, here is an old pic of my 53 back in the 70's. Looks like I used the original rad also, but no electric fan. I made motor mounts myself. Side mounted not front. Used the original back trany crossmember. Changed the  voltage regulator to a 12 volt one and used the factory 6v wiring and gauges for the rest of the car with no problems.  I used a gas peddle from something newer than 67poncho because it had a cable instead of a rod. It let me be a little more flexable as were I put the peddle.  I used a 57 chevy rear end that almost bolted right in. Just had to drill new pilot holes in the mounting pads to centre the diff. With my combo a 55 chevy drive shaft bolted right in. For exhaust I used 55-57 chevy fender exit hooker headers. You can just make them out .

Thanks Ian! This engine was never meant to be permanent, just a mock up but it runs so so good, it still resides there! You have done a much better job on yours!!!

Mine are side mounts as well and I should have stated that earlier as well. I am unfamiliar with the Pontiac mounting but it seems it is all under control.....

My first engine swap was a 283/ 3 speed from a 57 Chev into a 51 Chev. I used a Hurst front saddle mount that I bought used from some stock car owner. I used the complete powertrain from the 57. The diff was an almost bolt in and so was the rest of it. I do not even remember having to shorten the drive shaft. This was 40 years ago this summer I did that swap. I had everything installed and ready to start up but unfortunately was in a car accident and smashed my ankle and was laid up for a long time. I needed the money so the car was sold reluctantly after quite a bit of coaxing from my parents. The car was completed and driven regularly and every time I saw it I was at least able to say I installed the powertrain in it. The 49-52 Chevs and Pontiacs have really nice lines and I have always loved that style. Good luck with the conversion.

Nice job! I like cars with the ratrod look. They are made to be driven and enjoyed... very cool!

Does anyone know where you can find a disc brake conversion kit for this car? I checked all over and came up empty handed.
