Auto shifter linkage

Got a random question...I replaced the floor shifter cable for the TH400 on the 2+2 and noticed that the shift rods for a column shifter are all there too.  My son's '83 Hurst Olds had the same dual set-up and I wondered at that time whether it was a safety issue or if it had to do with the back-up light operation or something that they just did on the production line?

It has to do with you can only shift the car with the ignition on, and to run the shift indicator on the dash.   Did you also notice that once out of Park, you can shift your 2+2 by turning the collar on the column?
