'53 Pontiac Coil Spring Removal?

Hey Guys,

i've got the whole front end out of the car now , how do i get the coil springs out? I have 2 spring compressors here and either will work. There has to be a technique to this if anyone has any info please let me know.

thanks

Yes there is a technique, here we go with the picture:

At first I suggest you to use a motor stand and bolt it by the front engine mount.

Use a 1/2 threaded rod (the hardest one) with good washer (not the chinese one) and screw until it get loose for unbolting the top bolt of the king pin arm. After unscrew the threaded rod.

Hope this help.

The threaded rod is the same way I did my 69 beaumont. Works way better than spring compressors.

what i did with the 59 is put a chain around the bottom 2 coils and through the a-arm, put the ends of the chain together with a bolt (have chain tight) and just raise the frame of the car until the spring pops loose. Be really carefull

i just re-read the post and realized you said you had the front end out, then my way might not work, and it is a little dangerous i guess.

thanks for the help guys , those pictures help a lot Fitz. I'm going to give it another shot tonight and I'm guessing that the shocks just unbolt on their own and slide right out from underneath? is that correct.

Yes, for the shock you have to unbolt the top shock bolt, and the "scoop style" plate under and you are OK to remove the shock.

anyone have any alternative options for the bump stops that go under the upper control arm? i found some from a 49 ford but they are a little big. I was thinking of trying to make something but maybe someone else knows what to do.
