Anybody here a Shaw Direct Satellite TV customer?

A fellow from Shaw Direct knocked on my door earlier tonight pitching their services. Normally I slam the door however he seemed like a straight shooter and when I crunched the numbers it seems a bit cheaper than Rogers Cable (which I have along with my Internet) and provides more channels. The guy was low pressure and left all the brochures with me and said he'd call me in a couple of days. Anyone on here a customer of Shaw Direct? How is the service? We're not big TV watchers (yes, all our TV's still have picture tubes and are low def). We have 5 TV's however and with all the new customer rebates they are offering,  it seems fairly inexpensive to get set up.

They are offering an "Ontario Extra Value Package" for only $38.98 per month which gets you 225 channels. That's quite a few more channels than I have now (about 60)!

We have Bell Expressview.
Same thing ... the dish cuts out in T-storms/heavy rain and snow/icestorms ... just when you want it most.
You have to go outside every so often and knock the ice or brush the snow off the dish, in a storm or the signal cuts out. I heard Pam cooking spray sprayed on the dish or a plastic bag over the dish helps keep it clean.
We have no other choice here in the boonies (no cable), or else I'd stick with cable.

Todd,  My husband and I subscribed about 5 years back and discontinued because the service always went down in stormy weather.  The signal seemed to be very weak and we went back to rogers.  Ask the guy about signal strength!

Did Shaw buy out Starchoice? At one point i had Starchoice and it was really good. Now we're trying to cut costs so no cable/satellite. BTW, anybody want a Bell Dish, come take it off my roof if you want!

Shaw did take over Starchoice, they've been trying to get me back as a customer for a while, I'm not a big Rogers fan but it is reliable

We were with Starchoice since they started up, now Shaw. It wasn't too good at first but it's much better now, they are putting another satellite up in orbit next spring, claims that service will be better yet. We have the HD dish, but not many channels are in HD unless you pay more. We are unable to have cable. If we have a lightning storm, it's best just to go to bed.

Just for my buddy Carl427's benefit; the missus and I use rabbit ears out here! YEP! That's it. And we get a whole 9 channels! So see Carl? Not only do we have running water, hydro and an indoor bathroom, we also have state of the art TV hookup ta boot! LOL!

We've have SD for a about 5 years now. No real issues, the HD channels work great, it does cut out when it down pours or heavy snow. Shaw has always owned StarChoice they just changed the name recently.

We are on Shaw, like it, but as they say, weather plays havoc in bad storm. If you have 5 tvs they will all be on the same channel unless you go for "extra" black boxes for around$5 ea. a mth & a mutiple head on dish for the extra coax cable from ea. set. Their pkgs are OK but I'm going to call for some extra's singular like TNT without having to take the whole Pkg. that goes with it [ 8 chnl. & you only want on of them]

No matter what you get, there's still nothing on T.V.--except SPEED-- and my 8-year old daughter favours Mopars.

We just cancelled it after 8 years. Price went up really quickly with no extra value in the channels. Big thing for us was the time shifting, could watch the same program at an earlier time. Then the networks changed the schedule so that didn't work.

Had to get too much extra stuff to get what we wanted.

Will work on the car and the house for now. Maybe later we will hook up again, or not.

I guess regular TV by an Antenna will be a thing of the past by next year, so I heard on the news. All broadcasts will be done in digital??? They said you won't be able to receive it by Ant. anymore????? Cable or Sat. only Wish you could pick & choose the channels you want, not the bundles they pkg. up. Wanted the comedy chl. have to take 6 cartoon chls. to get it!!! I'm a little too old for cartoons!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have had satellite service since 89 and am presently subscribed to Shaw. Since Shaw has taken over the price went up dramatically and I will switch to Bell in the near future. Rogers is not an option as I have had it in the past and I literally have had it with them, both cell phone and tv. Do not be fooled by the promise of 225 channels or 450 or whatever; just look at the channels that are available and consciously look at what you will ACTUALLY use ie: how many alternative language channels will you use, how many music stations will you listen to, how many children's channels will you watch, how many sports channels will you use, how many shopping channels will you purchase from, how many HD channels, which you don't subscribe to, will be counted as one of those 225 channels and remember that each one of those is duplicated on your regular channels, how many abc, nbc, abc, ctv, c bc, xxx, channels do you require as they are all the same, just at different time slots, ie eastern time, central time western time, your time, whatever? The only reason I would go to Bell is that the service is just about identical however everything else I have is there; not necessarily a great reason however it is what it is. One thing I have noticed over the years is that whatever specific channel you would like to watch at a specific time you will not have a subscription to it in the long run and it will be necessary to purchase additional channels anyway. The problems with storms, ie rain and snow, occurr so seldom it really has never had an impact on my television viewing and I watch a considerable amout of programming. You also have to remember that television is for most people the main source of their entertainment, even if they don't wan't to admit it, therefor you should ensure you subscribe to a system that will meet your demands, not of those that would like to impose their views of television watching that they subscribe to. Sorry about being so long winded; I looked for stuff to take out and I just couldn't fine anything so there you go. Doug.

Thanks Doug. The Shaw rep never called me back so I don't think I'll pursue it any further. I think all the Satellite and cable services are too expensive. They need to get with the times and offer services where you pick only the channels you want and pay just for them, or better yet, just the shows you want and get them on demand..
