"multibillion-dollar mining project"
Why wouldn't they pay out a million?

The mining company knew all along that they had this guy by the cajones. They had the whole town backing them up.

We live in a "free" country until the government wants money and then watch out. They can make it impossible to live if they want. Freeze your back account and put you on the street if you don't play by their rules....fair or not. They gave me a little taste of what they can do about 10 years ago and it's not very much fun having the government squeeze you into a corner like a little mouse. Right or wrong, it is easier not to mess with the govt. because you will not come out ahead.

Something like dealing with insurance companies, but that's another story

Mining companies have bought out complete townsites in Timmins. The standard type of deal was market value plus 20% premium plus moving expenses. The people also had the choice of just get up and leave or salvage the house. Many of the residents salvage the building materials ie Kitchen cupboards, windows ,doors, flooring plumbing fixtures etc.

Think about it would you want to live next door to a mine under development? This guy was crazy not to accept the mines offer. He was offered over 20 times the value of the home. Show me anybody who would not accept an offer like that and I will show somebody who is mentally incompetent or just plain greedy.

If some company offered me 20 times market value I sign in a second.

Al

Yes..... I think he should have taken the money and split...If money wasn't an issue as stated in the story, Why was he holding out for a million..(Like Bill Cosby said about turning the windshield wipers on in the rain) they say...Dumb Guy..Dumb Guy..Dumb Guy..Dumb Guy.
