My father-in-law has a bug to buy an old car since he took the GTO for a drive. I am not sure how serious he is, but I thought I would do a little research for him in case he is serious!! At this point I think he is looking at the early 60's style, not sure exactly what year....also he has been looking at convertible cars. What are the common problem areas with these cars that should be looked for. Anything in particular with the driveline, conv. tops/mechanism. I don't know anything about these cars and thought maybe someone here might be able to shed some light on this subject. He wants a driver car so it doesn't have to be a big hp car, just something reliable and fun to cruise in.
Thanks in advance guys.....

I had a 66 coupe. Stay away from any from up here or the northern U.S. They were really bad for cowl rot and it's a real pain to fix. Being unibody cars you want to make sure the car is solid underneath. You're better off to find one in California and Arizona. You'll be miles ahead even with $1700 in shipping. On the plus side you can pretty much build one from repro parts and it's easy to upgrade them to modern V8's and transmissions. My 66 was from Arizona and I cleaned the frame rails with Windex!
There is a reason why they are referred to as Rustangs.
Check frame rails, torque boxes, floors, rear quarters etc for rust. Everything is available and quite inexpensive however quality does vary widely on replacement parts. Theres some real junky parts out there.
I've restored 2, a convertible(65) and coupe(66). The wife just loves her red/red 66 coupe 6cyl.
They are straight forward to work on. And there are numerous self help books to guide you along.
OK, thanks guys... I will be seeing him tomorrow, so we will see if he has more to say about it. I am going to email him some of this info so he has an idea of what can be expected.
Thanks again.....

really bad for tourque box rot, cowl rot on the inner, cowl rot where it joins to the strut towers, strut tower rot, and strut tower to touque box, and strut tower to cowl, and firewall. the rust, i mean rest, is the same as any other pony car. like others have said, buy a u.s. car, its well worth the extra money. its more $ up front, but less in the end.
