I'm in the process of rebuilding the front end of my '64 Safari, and I ran into a slight snag...
Is there a way to remove the upper control arm on the driver's side without removing the steering shaft? It runs close enough that I can't slide the upper control arm off the two bolts holding it to the frame. I know this these bolts are used for the camber adjustment, so i'm not sure if they're fixed/sloted, or I can hammer them out through the frame (they're in there good).
After I scraped off a bunch of gunk from the steering shaft, I realized it's adjustable on both ends and it's easily removable.
To answer my own question about the bolts, they are indeed "keyed" or "ribbed" on the shaft where it passes into the frame to prevent turning when tightining the nuts during a camber adjustment. Although there is a 5/8" head on the bolt, attempting to crank on it would screw up the bolt, frame, ratchet or all the above.
Stay tuned for more questions I will ask and then answer myself!
Sounds like you figured it out already. There much like a wheel stud. I have hamered them out in the past using a block of wood to protect the threads.
