1981 Lemans GT


Anybody have any information on these car's? I do know this about these car's, produced for Canada only, came in two colour combination's. Black and gold or dark red and gold. I would like to know what the package consisted of. I came across a dark red and gold one in Balzac Alberta for $750, pretty solid and original, it's on KIJIJI. Still has the original decal's on it. If someone has any info they can share, please do. Every one I have seen is a bench seat car with very few option's. They all seem to have the rally IV's as well.

As was my habit at that time, I went around to the dealers and looked at these Lemans and Malibu 2 doors, armed with desire to to buy a new one but without any money to make it happen.

I remember looking at an '80 Monte Carlo fully loaded new on the lot at the GM dealer in Verona on Hwy. 38 at the time. The window sticker listed at just over $10,000. My first case of sticker shock!

Wow! I didn't know that they raced the LeMans in NASCAR. I thought they were all Grand Prix. Interesting, thanks for that.

i was gona pick that thing up. the gt was still a 267 car, not even a 305. does anyone know of a high(er) performance 81 ever produced?

I didn't look it up , but I think they were all the smaller 7.5   and they were ok until you put on sticky tires..

As far as I've ever seen or heard, the only G body (actually was an A body until Celebrity was introduced and dubbed an A body) that ever used the 8.5" was the Hurst Olds and/or 442, 1983-1987 and the Turbo Regals 1984-1987. There was no 8.5" for these cars prior to 1983 and contrary to popular belief, the Grand Prix 2+2 and the Monte SS never used the 8.5".

Also, they only came in 2 ratios, 3.42 in the Buick and 3.73 in the Olds. The crazy thing is, posi was optional in at least the Turbo Buicks. I'm not sure about the Olds.

Good luck finding the 8.5 diff for those cars. They are rare and worth quite a bit. My guess would be that you can have one built for only 25% more than finding one used. They are usually worth more than the car they are in or the car has been saved from going to scrap because of the pricey diff in it.
