Hi Members, not sure where to put this topic, so here it is in the lounge.
I am in the process of restoring our 65 SD Acadian Beaumont Convertible and am using a process called ELECTROLYSIS-RUST REMOVAL. I got this info from a friend that was removing rust from some old antique door henges. You can go on line to look this process up.
First you need a large plastic tub filled with water, then add Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda ( I added 1 cup), and some type of Iron Anode (rerod or any metal). You can use any 12 volt battery & jumper cables. Place the positive ends of the cable to the + post on the barttery & the other end to the + anode. Place the negitive cable to the part that you want to remove the RUST from and the negitive cable to the - post on the battery. Cable should be attached to battery after attaching to part & anode. Make sure anode & part do not touch. When most of rust has been removed anything left can be removed with a wire brush and then cleaned with water. Once part has been cleaned, rinsed and dried you can paint it with POR 15.
I checked with cost of sand blasting and was quoted $100/per hour. Cost of removivg Rust using Electrolysis. Tub free, water free, battery & jumper cables used, A&H washing soda $4, Anode from hardware store $9. This method usualy takes several hours or longer depending on part size & amount of rust on it.

Buy muriatic acid from canadian tire. about 10 dollars for 4 liters Use full strength in a bucket, dip parts for about ONE-FIVE minutes, and every speck of rust is obliterated in seconds. Do not dip aluminium or pot metal/white metal- it will vaporize it instantly!
Use it OUTSIDE!!!!! and wear gloves and goggles. Trust me you will like the results.
Test it out on the rustiest,scaliest, worst piece of metal you have, you WILL be amazed!!!!!
For slower rust removal, basic White vinegar in a bucket for about 6 days, works great too.

MY BEAUMONT HAS 4 STUDDED TIRES AND 2 BLOCKHEATERS......AND LOTS OF OIL UNDERNEATH. The other one has a longer roof.

I've had good success using electrolysis on my old panel truck project. I used a heavy wire mesh as my anode, bend it around the part that needs de-rusting.

I used this acid years ago for stains in the driveway. I believe it was sold by pool suppliers. Last I checked, they said it wasn't available for consumer use in the states, too many people dumped it in the sewer systems. It may still be bought commercially, not sure.
If you rinse in in a BakingSoda bath immediatly after, it will not flash rust as fast.
Best thing to do is dry the part right away. Also, if you hit it with a wirewheel lightly it will remove the flash rust and shine it up nice and minty!

Hey guys. I just searched (and found) this thread. I have an old rusted leg (...punch line inserted here...) from an iron firebox that holds sentimental value to the wife. I'm thinking that the mentioned acid from Cdn Tire might be a good way to go in cleaning it up. If I understand correctly, I should submerse it in the fully concentrated acid (using safety gear) for up to five minutes...Then I should rinse it with baking soda and water? Thoughts/confirmation is appreciated. thx

Whooooooweeeee. I just mixed me a batch of this ****tail. I did a 1:1 with water as it's my first time working with this stuff. I think both my neighbors can smell the fumes. Seems to have done the job although there is a greasey residue. Not sure if that's from before, or if it's a biproduct? Thx for the tips.

Did you use Muriatic acid? I use it full strength. It will turn brown over time, but does not lose its strength.
Yup, I used the acid. Should have used it full strength but I read the directions which mention 4 parts water to 1 part acid. Then I remembered the comments indicating to use it full strength, and topped it up to being 1:1 ratio. Pretty potent stuff!
