'76/77 5 speed LeMans

76/77 5 speed stick shift Pontiac LeMans.

Any out there in the CP world?

Was just talking to a gentleman who apprenticed at Jack May Pontiac Buick in Manotick ON, and he remembers a few being sold by that dealer. Likely had the Olds 260 V8.

The 5sp was only available with the 260 Olds motor.

Yes, and I would also say none built in Oshawa, they would be from the USA.

They had an odd shift pattern, reverse and first were on the same plane like a 3 speed standard. Same deal on Monza type cars with 5 speeds so I always assumed it was the same trans.

Thanks

I've never heard of a Lemans version, only the Olds Cutlass. The transmission was the first design Warner T-5 that was only good for about 305 lbs-ft, as much torque as the 260 would put out.  Later T-5s were much stronger.

I know a guy in Oklahoma who bought his 1976 Cutlass S 260 5-speed new. He still has it today but now it has a 455 & a Doug Nash 5-speed biggrin.gif

Wow, you learn something every day.

The Nissan (Datsun) 240SX of mid '70s vintage had the same wonky shift pattern.

That five speed was a Borg-Warner T-50. They really couldn't take a huge pounding. They were used in the H-Bodies (Monza and derivatives along with the Cosworth Vega).

I did know a guy that had the 260 V-8 / five speed combo in a Cutlass. He loved that set up. i tried for a while to buy the car from him but he would never sell it. He ended smacking a tree or guardrail or combination thereof. He wanted to sell it then! He had hammered the car so hard it broke the transmission.

That vintage of Cutlass was a sweet car. Good looking, nice ride...

I think the same transmission was in the '82-83 AMC Spirits and Concords with the five speed option, except with the conventional shift pattern.

The transmissions used in these cars are actually T-5's. They were adapted from the. T-4 with the addition of the fifth gear overdrive. They are not World Class transmissions. They will work fine in moderate horsepower cars but don't really take a ton of abuse.

I stand corrected.

There is a World Class T-5 in my Studie and it is very slick shifting number.

I have a WC T-5 for my Astre. Came out of a Mustang. FoMoCo used the WC versions and were better than the GM WC versions.

An aftermarket shifter is a must for these transmissions.
