58 Buick Special $800 in Ont

Looks like a good buy on the Buick.  Newly rebuilt transmission, but needs some engine work.  ...and needs to have the trailer pulled out of the mud! biggrin

I've always liked these for some reason - big chunky design ...kinda reminds me of a railway locomotive with about 2 tons of chrome on it!

58 Buick special in solid shape. The trans has been rebuilt by mr.T. The engine has an estimate from the machine shop(one cracked piston and bent valve). I have the ont ownership. The price is firm. It cost more than this to get the trans rebuilt.

Wretched excess at its peak! Gotta love the acres of chrome on these big barges. Late 50's customs made good use of those grilles, eh?

Exterior looks complete, a nieghbour had one of these when I was a little boy, coral and white. We'd have to walk past his place on the way to school. He had a white pickett fenced corner lot and it was usually in the garage but we always hoped it would be parked in the driveway. Always liked that car!

For $800 bucks the engine & tranny would be worth more than that for a RAT ROD, then part the rest of the "sucker" out!!!! IMO

I like it! I would buy it if it was easy to certify.
How are the floors and frame?

I'm surprised for a car that's been sitting that long the plates are fairly recent (2-3 years old)

I haven't emailed the owner (and don't plan to because it's more of a project than I'm equipped to take on at the moment), but it almost looks to me that the car was being driven not too long ago, in that he had the trans rebuilt and then the engine must have crapped out on him.  Just speculating, of course, but it sounds like he just wants to get rid of it.

No way to know how the body is without looking at it in person, but at least all of the trim looks like it's there.  The rear bumper is showing some tell-tale rot-through, though.

He wanted a lot more a few monthes ago. I might have to email him.

Its a lot more solid than my 57' Pathfinder, and I have a nailhead sitting at my friends shop that is already rebuilt!

Just checking out the lic. plates, starts with an A series so it's not that long ago it was plated [if they belong to the 58] would still want to see underside ETC.

I like that big barge. I am going to see if the guy still has it and how bad it is underneath.

This is about the last car made that still used a torque tube. Makes engine and trans swaps a real PITA, and the only engines that will bolt in are the 364, 401, and 425 nailheads. Doh. I think this car has a 2 speed in it also.

Bought it. Surprised to see it here! with you all talking about it.
You should have moved, but I'm glad you didn't.
Driven in in '78 with bad piston and valves at 81,000; pulled from the barn before it came down this year. Modern plates were only to please the bylaw officer!
Transmission never even got fluid in it since the rebuild.
Engine is out and in pieces. Looks like the heads were tanked and rebuilt. New water pump with it.
Messy removal -- guage connectors etc. messed up.
One bad front spring. One small hole in pass' reverse lens. Needs side mirror. Driver's quarter very slightly twisted -- 4x4" hole at the front of the wheel well. One side spear needs the hammer. Chrome otherwise complete with some pitting, but ... driver. Rot through rear bumper. Interior panels all good ... some rust showing along headliner bows ... seats will need upholstery (foam crunchy in back). Glass all good. Steering wheel unbroken. Turn signal switch disassembled at column. Ignition switch disassembled. Door and trunk locks good with keys. Gas tank good. Spare tire well rotted through. Floors solid. Doors solid -- close very nicely. Hubcaps attached in good shape. Most rust showing was surface only ... a handful of coin-sized holes have been temporarily siliconed over. $800 plus $1000 to get it home ... Very happy!

!!! Those committed to restoration to original, READ NO FURTHER! !!!
One month later ...
Front end frame removed just ahead of firewall and finger-jointed to '94 GMC pickup frame section -- steering, disc brakes, suspension (softer coils still needed). Rear end: '94 Caprice cop car -- also grafted in, but without removing original frame. Steering column replaced with key-on-the-tree (will appear almost original). 4speed overdrive auto matched to '86 305 (carb'ed). Now running and driving ... heading for winter storage ... body in spring.
Good rear bumper is coming from Alberta.
Power window actuators (car had cranks) coming from Chilliwack.
Cheers.

Nice save!  Great to see that it's gonna be cruising the roads again and not parted out!  Or demoed.....

Original is nice, but drivable is even nicer!  It sounds like you're making it the way GM would have if they had the technology in 1958.

And I agree with Todd also... pics would be great!

Two thumbs up!

I may need a little coaching on how to post pics. Here's the first try.
Thanks for the supportive replies -- I wasn't sure how my modifications might be received. I'm looking forward to being able to drive anytime/anywhere; but I'm not looking forward to the conversations at Show & Shines with guys who have "better ideas" about what I should have done!  -- Adrian
