One mans old collection up for auction in BC Oct 2 2010

Found this  in the Trader. Many more parts cars and tools.  Everything belongs to Gordon Philpott.

Wow..can't tell too much but seeing as they're here in BC the bodies don't look too ravaged from salt. Although the interior gets some snow so I don't know. I'd like to get a look at that '64 CS rag...

When I see things like this it really gets me down. First some poor car guy has died and we all are seeing this too often now. Then I look at the cars and wonder why. Why would anyone collect these old cars just to let them rot away? They really aren't worth anything much now. I see this and think it would have been better to let someone have them who would have taken care of them in the first place. It is irresponsible to have somethng you can't or don't maintain. It is selfish behaviour. It is ashame to see people hoard things and never do anything with them, of course it is some sort of mental disorder.

That's a long drive north on the Alaska highway. My daughter lived there for a few months, and I was up there a few times. Of course I went looking for cars. Never saw these. It's not a big town, but I did find a 68 Firebird 400 ragtop sitting in a carport with stuff piled on top of it.

You're right, something like a 17 hour drive from here.  Probably worth it for someone who has the hots for something, I'd doubt if there would be many buyers there.

If someone comes along and pays you money for ALL the junk you have lying around piled floor to ceiling and wall to wall and you accepted that money; would that make you a Whoarder? Just wondered. Just puttin' it out there! LOL! Probably a lot of people picked these cars up for a song or before they went to the scrapyard and always had dreams of winning that big lottery that would
allow them to do each and every car up the way they wanted it. But I do agree with Ray in that some people are just mentally ill when it comes to some massive collections of things. It wasn't all that uncommon 20 years ago to drive by a farm and see multiple vehicles out behind barns as that's where they got parked when they either died or a new vehicle took their place. Nowadays cities and townships frown upon that sort of thing so hence most of the cars are gone now. There were quite a few places around Stratford/Sebringville area where multiple cars were on properties
but there was always a gate or chain across the driveway and these people had NO intentions of even dealing with a person should they show interest in buying what they had behind said barns.
Once they were found DEAD in their dwellings by a neighbour or family member, THEN the place was cleaned right up so it could be sold. Not all that uncommon at all.

I used to know a yard with several 1970 Pontiac B-Body cars in such a situation. I just wished there was a way to get in touch... I wnated to know more about these cars and the guy who kept them. One day a buddy saw the cars on a hauler out there.

I guess the old man passed away... Bless.

I had no storage or money but on a hunch I hustled out to a large wrecker's nearby and found them. I managed to find a few stainless parts that I was looking for with the tools I had and made notes of what I could go back for later.

I was a few months too late getting my stuff together. When I went back out for the rust-free bumpers I was looking for I learned that all those '70 Pontiacs were just crushed.

HORROR!

Definately not a hoarder in a hoarder sense of the word like these people on the show. But cars and car parts that pertain to my models, absolutely!

It's funny, when people ask me what I am going to do with them, I tell those that can pick up on the joke, is that I am going to put them in my back yard for the fall each year like I have for years, and when spring arrives, I have the best bumper crop you ever did see!!! Most laugh at me but some, just like many in our hobby, just don't get it!!!

Besides, "the boy who dies with the most toys, dead or alive, wins!!!! (lol)

Thanks Fred......... Guess I am not alone after all............. wink

...like Ray says, it is too bad that people do hoard these great old cars AND LEAVE THEM OUTSIDE FOR 20 YEARS to rot! I know it's not feasible for most people to build multiple barns to house them in but it's still a shame to see the elements just rot them away. I will confess though that when I was about 15 I was the lucky recipient of multiple parts off some "field cars" near Maple ON. Out hiking with our dogs we came across a bunch of abandoned cars way back in some farmer's field. We returned "avec tools" the next week and a 430 cu. in Mercury engine was "relieved" of its quite rebuildable Holley 4bbl. carburator which ended up on my '57 Fairlane 312....! My misspent youth...
