Charging issues

My car seems to have charging issues , i don't know anything about this system I'm waiting for my manual. The car had working fine and the lights worked but i had a brand new battery in it for the first test drive and i never shut the car off on the first run out. On my second drive i shut the car off at Tim Horton's and it would not start again for a few mins and seem to turn over really slow. Does anyone have any how to's or what to look for in this situation?

thanks

Is the generator charging the battery? What kind of voltage at battery terminals with fast idle?

i will check with a meter tomorrow and get back to you. I just took it for a drive and i shut it off and restarted it a few times but it's always hard starting once it's warm. Is yours the same ?

At first it was then I realized my generator was bad. Some other things
that causes this, battery cable size, dirty connections. Did you polarize you generator?

Everything Bob53 said above is true, but on those 6 volts car first, take the lead acid gravity in your battery, you must have around 1280 on a good charged battery, after, you must look for voltage lost look at picture below and take all the test you see, you must don't see anything or less than 1 volt on a 3 volts scale on your meter while starting. This test will tell you where you are losting current, and why it turn slow on starter. After, if evreything is OK you may expect (if problem persist) a carbon buildup into the combustion chamber, when hot the carbon light up the gas BEFORE the spark plug and fight against the starter, that's why on some car the starter run OK on a cold engine and not on a hot one.

If the starter have a hot temperature problem, you can pour cold water on it and see what happen, if start fine after the water drop it is your starter, if not carbon build up...

Fitz.

PS: the work table should be see like the engine block...

also, do you have a seperate coil? I was told these can heat up and makes it harder to start, if its not an electrical problem that is. I had problems with mine, put a new one on and it was fine (but now i changed to an altenator though) Also look into changing the brushes in your generator, mine were pretty bad, changed them and made a big difference.
