Potential trade - 67 GP for 84 Harley or 2010 Royal Enfield

My GP was just appraised for 11k but we all know how much weight that carries, and the bike is the least appealing (to me) Harley model. I agreed to trade (pending both inspections) and am waiting to see if he wants the car. I dont ride bikes anymore, and I dont have a licence, but both my  boys ride bikes, and the wife thinks it would look nice in pink. I know it would be easier to store and sell if needed. (the fairing needs to go!)

I expect in a CP forum to get 95% negative replies and on a Harley forum 95% positive, but feel free to chime in with  your thoughts. I like to bounce things off like-minded people before I jump.

RE: Potential trade - 67 GP for 84 Harley

Not that I know much about Harleys but I can see that the bike you are looking at is from before the "EVO" or "evolution" engine came out in the late 80's. Before the EVO, the longevity of a Harley engine is not that great. I'm sure the Harley guys would be more help to you than I am but I have been around those bikes a little and have been educated enough to know that the newer bikes (87 and newer) have more value than 84 models. The bike you are looking at is not stock either which brings down the value somewhat unless you want a hotrod bike. And I will agree with you on this bike being less appealing than other Harleys. It would be 2nd last on my Harley list, right before a sportster.

My humble opinion is that your GP is worth more than the bike. I have had bikes and would never have another one. Everyone can drive a car but not everyone can ride a motorcycle. The GP is much easier for a family to enjoy. Harley guys only get the thumbs up from Harley guys. Most people will appreciate the GP and smile and possibly tell you what a cool car you have or even a story about when they were kids and rode in one.

No matter what, it is up to you Stone but my thinking is that you are trading down, not up. The guy who has the bike will be smiling if you make the trade.

What's with the bikers & trades??? When I was trying to sell the 64 Catalina, thats all I got, guys wanting to trade their bike for the Cat. I declined all of the offers, no lic. to drive it, too old & would do "bodily harm" to my self. if I did ride it. Rode when I was in my 20's but that was a while ago. May not be easy to "unload" [did I say that out loud] SELL one of those???

I can't comment on the value of the Harley as I have no interest in them and therefore know nothing about them.

But I will say that you would be trading a cool car that you know inside and out for another vehicle that you are not familiar with that may be hiding more issues that you would have to deal with.

Then you still have to sell it.

I know I am very biased as I love your GP and would be interested in buying myself it if I were in a position to at the moment, but I wouldn't make the trade if I were you.

I like bikes and that one's cool but worth maybe 7500 tops on a good summer's day..
Less actually now being the season has ended!.

Gotta be careful what exactly you've got w/ Harleys anymore too as lots out there are built on aftermarket frames w/ unique HD serial #'s and ownerships that say HD to, not Harley Davidson!.

Cool Thrush decal!!!

That's not a bad looking bike. If you are going to keep it rather then sell it why not?
The 84 models don't have a strong resale so don't trade to sell. Other than on this board most people would take the bike. I like your Pontiac, but we are a small minority.

i have owned BOTH. Tiny on here would give best advice as he owns both as well.
Do what makes you happy. Their are cons and pros to both.
I dont miss polishing my hotrod for hours on end to show it parked and then drive it home
yet the bike you can ride all day and its a completely different feeling than driving a hotrod.
Hotrods are a labour of love. I think all summer I washed my bike 3x maybe...my hotrod was a constant detail job. HDs are cheap to run and fun. HotRods seat 4 usually and can be driven in colder weather. They both have cons and pros. Do what makes ya happy.
as for now...Iam enjoying my $11 fill ups for 220kms. I dont miss the 4 M.P.G. lol

those old evo bikes have a low resale value, i have had lots of bikes and still do, a 84 is the second year of the evo motor being a split year in 83 of shovel heads and evos, 70,000 km on a evo its getting tired if it hasnt been rebiult early 5 spd tranny, i would pass, maybe take it out and see if it will stand on the back fender still then make up your mind ??? have someone who knows look at it for you for sure that old dinosaur could have a few battle scares.

Thanks for all the thoughts and ideas. The pic below is another prospective trade...it is new. (2010 Royal Enfield Bullet Military $7500 at dealer.  Its hard to tell which of these prospects are wasting my time, if not all. I love the GP, but I'd need a 3 car garage. I just cant see using it anymore. I'd trade it for anything of similar value that isnt 20' long.  I am down to $5500 cash, but still making plans for storage.

RE are that expensive? Ithought they were made in India are really cheap? I really don't understand how you can't sell your car...maybe you want to try european ads? I can give you a hand for French translation, maybe you can check shipping from halifax to Northern France/Holland/Germany...let me know

Hey Johnnee,

There is very little 'luxury' money in the East...some consider us the 'poor provinces', and I suppose there is some truth to it. What we lack in funds, we make up for in hospitality!   I think with some proper marketing, I could sell it, but I am so busy these days . Its looking like it will sit outdoors in a shelter. I dont need the money, but I suspect I will have this problem next year too if I dont sell it. I am so thrilled with my Beaumont, I could part with the GP easily. I am seriously considering building a 'shop' on my property here, if I do, the GP can sit here forever, but she'll have to spend this winter in the cold. My current 2 car garage is really now a 1 car with the giant woodstove, a second car fits, but the paint would bubble, so 2 in the summer and 1 in the winter.

I know nothing about Royal Enfield, but it looked like a way out of my predicament. I'd trade it for almost ANYTHING of equal value that wasnt 20' long.

I do speak french, but thanks anyway. I'd never considered Europe, but who knows who might want it. I would assume that shipping would be similar to the purchase price!

One comment with a little constructive criticism (all meant with the best of intentions):
I noticed in your kijiji ad that the photos don't really give the viewer a good idea of the current state of the car.  One photo is that really cool doctored one that looks awesome but doesn't really show the car's condition.  One only shows a small part of the interior, but doesn't give the potential buyer an idea of what the whole interior looks like.  One shows the car without the front valence on it.  The video shows the car in its "before" condition.

Again, I'm only trying to be helpful, but before you go trading it off, why not make another effort to sell it?  Take some really good quality photos on a sunny day that show how good the car looks now (with views of front and rear and both sides as well as some 3/4 shots), some good views of the interior (make sure it's cleaned up - I see a lot of ads with dirty interiors and frankly it's a turn-off), an under-hood shot, and some shots of the "bad spots" like the trunk pinholes and where the frame has been repaired.  Some in-progress pics showing what the car looked like in bare metal might be useful.  Maybe a pic of the spare parts that come with it would be helpful too.

Thing is, to sell the car you need to show people what they will be getting for their hard-earned money.  The more photos the better, also.  Whatever you can't fit on the kijiji ad, put in an online photo album and include the link in the ad.

It may not sell your car any faster but it certainly can't hurt.  You're not alone as I've seen tons of ads on the 'net that just leave more questions than answers.  If you're going to entice somebody to travel 2 or more hours to see your car you're best off to show them as much of it as you can before they make the decision to travel, because if you're not showing them enough of the car they will likely assume the worst.

Now I know from the posts of all the work you've done on the car that it is a reall good one, especially for the price you're asking - you just have to let the potential buyers know that!

Also, maybe try posting it on the Halifax kijiji site in addition to the NB site - a little extra exposure won't hurt!

Again, please don't take this the wrong way, it's just my 2˘ from all the cars I've looked at over the years and all the ads I've seen since the internet has become a way of marketing old cars.

Good luck with it all!!

Yes Mark, great advice indeed. I hope I'm not coming across as whining about why wont my car sell. I am not at all surprised, given the poor effort I put forth.  I appreciate constructive criticism.  Someone had it right in an earlier thread....."there must be a reason".  I would like to see someone enjoy the car, even if it means a loss for me. I could use an original brochure to show the interior....it is that good(IMO).  I hope to give it the respect it deserves in the spring, by following your advice.
I retired in 2008 as a pensioner, but got an offer I couldnt refuse and now am back to full time, and everything has changed.  I do change my mind often(not woman often, but close) and I recently developed this old car disease, I expect to be dragging more home in the future, so I am leaning towards another shop, where I could keep all my toys.  Thanks for everyones input.

Hey, I hope you don't mind my constructive criticism, just wanting to help out a little.

Which ever way you decide, just do what makes you happy, since that's what it's all about anyways.

Good Luck with whatever you decide!

-Mark
