What do you remember in your house?

I got this idea from another forum. What a great idea! I have had a riot reading other guy's notes.

I will start.

What do you remember from your house?

___________________________________________________________________

-Splitting all the firewood for the winter (with an axe, no log splitters then!) For doing that, I earned my first fishing reel. I was 11.

-Waiting for my rich "aunt" and "uncle" (he was a lawyer) to come for a visit from the city. They ALWAYS brought us a box full of stuff their kids were tired of and we got cool new toys to play with that way.

-Begging dad to take us for a drive around the countryside on Sunday afternoon/evening.

-Making mud balls, attaching them to the end of nice long fresh green flexible willow branches, and seeing how far we could fling them. Occasionally we were lucky enough to actually hit a blackbird with one!

-Begging for a snow shovel for Christmas and getting it! I think I was around 10 or 11.

-Walking home the mile and a half from the one room school (my first 5 years in school) and finding fresh baked buns on the kitchen counter when I walked in the door.

-Dad taking the car down on the creek (right in our back yard) in the winter time once the ice was thick enough!!!

-Rabbit stew. Yuck!!!

-Wheelies with the garden tractor!

-Watching the very first show on our first TV (black and white of course) It was the Flinstones. Also, Ed Sullivan Sunday nights and Red Skelton Tuesday nights. My mom and dad loved Red.

This list could go on and on. I was blessed with a wonderful childhood...

-A dirt pile on the front lawn announcing the end of the school year and the beginning of a new reno project at the house.

-Crab apple fights with the Irish kids down the street (there were eight of them); we played World War II and they called me Tokyo Rose.

-Listening to Beatle records on mom and dad's Telefunken in the living room.

-Shooting caterpillars out of my brother's pellet gun.

-Blowing up dead bird carcasses with cherry bombs.

-Clackers.

-Tony the neighbour and his oversized 'Fro.

-Guys in platform suede shoes.

-Staying up late to watch Joker's Wild and On The Buses.

-The Parisienne breaking down and on its last legs.

-Dad smoking at the table during dinner.

-Our avacado kitchen cabinets and competing orange chairs.

-Formica.

-My plug in record player.

-STP decals and 45s.

-My cousin avoiding Vietnam.

-The Momma's and Pappas, ELO and ELP.

-The Pat Paulsen Show and Laugh In.

-Nixon's resignation.

-Betty Crocker recipes with shortening.

-Deep fryers.

- chrome ashtray stand in the living room that had an airplane on it, with space for butane lighter.

- pole lamp in the living room.

- dad's recliner.

- the fake fireplace with a light in it trying to look like a real fire.

- 2 TV channels (CFAC & CFCN), but we had color starting in 1967.

- phone was on the wall by the bathroom, it was an old wooden one with a dial on the front (I still have it).

- chrome kitchen table and chairs.

- watching the Apollo launches and moon landings.

- ALL adults and most teenagers smoked.

- my sister working at the restaurant at the B/A station on the highway.  They had a juke box with the big chrome table top selectors.

- 25 cents bought you a bottle of pop, a bag of chips and a nickel piece of sponge toffee.

- having to be quiet when dad was on a long distance call.

- receiving a long distance call was like getting a call from the other side of world.

- mom milking the cows, then seperating the cream with the "cream separator" on the kitchen counter.

- going out to the farmyard with a pot of leftovers, and yelling "here kitty kitty", and running like heck before getting attached by a hundred barnyard cats.

- but the high-light of the week was saturday afternoon's "Stampede Wrestling" was on TV.  And my dad took us to the live event a few times, man I'll never forget that.

My huge train layout in the basement and hearing dad running it after I had gone to bed.

Watching all those 70's TV shows on our Electrohome "instant on" colour tv and getting in trouble for turning the dial too fast

Watching my dad make his own cigarettes as it was cheaper

My parents having large Euchre parties with my aunts and uncles and the thick cloud of cigarette smoke in the air.

Playing hide go seek with the kids in the neighborhood until after dark

Jumping our bikes over homemade ramps-without helmets on

Setting up hotwheels track in our livingroom

Christmas morning

Running through the sprinkler on hot summer days

Climbing our big maple tree with friends and sitting up there all afternoon reading comic books

Ahh, the good old days!

WOW!!! So many things I remember as well...

Clackers, I remember the glass ones(then they took them off the market because the glass would shatter????, wonder why?)

Old black dial telephone, hanging on the wall

Listening to moms Ray Price, Johnny Cash, Hank Snow and Merle Haggard records(some were 78's)

I remember my mustang bike with the banana seat, cut lawns so I could add the 3' sissy bar and backrest, and dual mirrors

Practising "wheelies" on said bike whenever possible without a helmet

Walking about 5miles to both elementary and High Schools

Building "forts" in the backyard and hiding in them to smoke(and take girls)

Buying my mom a pack of smokes for a quarter(she'd give me a paper dollar and I could keep the change)

Watching Gilligans Island, Flintstones and The Fugitive on B&W TV

Reading all my stepfathers Hod Rod mags(after he was finished with them of course)

Taking a bath in the old Claw tub(we didn't have a shower)

Carrying my buddys wagon to my house in December... Racing wagons around the teleposts in the basement.... trying to find suckers to push.
Jumping on the bed downstairs until the legs bust off... unscrewing the remaining legss then jumping some more.
Racing Bikes around the teleposts in the basement.
My sister rolling me up in cardboard head to toe then pushing me over.... waking up upstairs several hours later ??
The race set everywhere !!!
Model paint everywhere !!!
Racing Skateboards around the teleposts in the basement.... learning how to patch drywall.
Shooting pucks at the old 1950 deep freeze... cleaning off the black marks no damage

Now I have more memories. My parents got the shag rug craze in the 70's. Ours was deep red and we had to rake it..

My bike had a banana seat and could do sweet catwalks! It had a working speedometer on it. My friend had a "Yapper" cb radio on his bike. I was jealous.

Listened to non stop Abba blaring from my older sisters room. Enjoyed listening to American Top 40 with Casey Kasem.

Blaring my parents floor model stereo with ACDC when they werent home.

Hearing my neighbors high powered CB radio come over our radio, TV, telephone...

My mom screaming at someone on the "party line" to "GET OFF THE PHONE!"

My dad coming home from lunch from the printing plant and the smell of ink on him.

Street hockey. "CAR!"

Cap rockets and balsa wood gliders

Setting my toy cars on fire...and almost losing control of one fire

Shooting wild berries with my home made slingshot. My friends and I would get old tractor innertubes and use them as "forts" while we shot each other. I still have both eyes..

Playing marbles

Kissing tag with the two girls across the street. "oops I fell down, now Tina's gonna kiss me!"

The older kids two doors down who had cool cars who let me hang around and be a pain. I still remember the names and the cars:
Mark had a 73 442 (and a hot sister 3 years older than me!)
Another Mark had a 69 Beaumont with an insane big block
Darryl had a 70 Monte Carlo
Marshall had a black Chevy Gypsy van with Cragar SS wheels
Dan had a Chevy stepside pickup- black with flames..

My parents had one of those radios that picked up Police calls. Friday nights were the best for listening!

hahaha. I remember feeding the spiders. There's a common spider that is all over the place around here- they are big brown ones. When I was a kid I discovered if you made a certain low pitched humming sound they would lift their legs up and fall out of their webs. Now my son does this!

We put flies in the freezer to numb them and then glued them to pieces of paper, thawed them, gave them syrup and watched them fly away with the paper attached!biggrin

Bug abuse was common with most kids..

I used to catch praying mantis and put them on my model train. It looked just like one of those cheesy Japanese monster movies!

Taking the pack of firecrackers to the pasture. Sticking them in the cow pies and running like CRAZY so you wouldn't get sprayed!

Getting away with hitting a kid at school (one room country school, about grade 3) because my mom was the substitute teacher that day.

Age 6-8, riding in the cab of the 65 GMC pickup and having to hide on the floor when we saw a cop car coming because we had 4 in the cab.

Seeing my dad on TV when he was president of the Manitoba Wildlife Federation!

Sitting in the back of the boat (age 5'ish) fishing with my dad. One of my most favourite memories of all time...

Climbing up the basswood tree outside my bedroom window and playing there for hours.

Eating Nan King cherries off the trees outside the house, basically till my guts hurt!

Buying a speedometer for my bicycle at the start of summer holidays. When I went back to school it had just over 500 miles on it!

Sticking the poker through the side vent on the wood stove and heating it until it was glowing red.

Walking the 1000 feet to my uncle's yard (which is the yard I now live on) to watch Hockey Night in Canada on Sat nights after my dad had passed away.

The day my dad drove up in our brand new 62 Acadian wagon (I was abut 5). He had his Fedora on, I can see it like yesterday.

My parents ALWAYS treating each other (and us) like gold. I am SO fortunate.

Yeah, this is good stuff guys.  All things we can relate to, some wève shared.
For me we lived in the country and i was lucky enough (although I sure didnt think so at the time) to have chores to do on my dads mink farm (politially incorrect or what) so we really appreciated the time we had to fool around.

Some of the things we did
-making guns out of wood and playing army
-arguing about whether or not they missed you and could you shoot back with your last ounce of strength if they actually got you.
-playing tag or hide and seek or all kind of games i cant remember now until it was totally dark
-bugging mom and dad for a pellet gun and actually getting one to share with my brothers.(and getting shot with it eventually)
-going on hikes to the town dump which was close by to see what people actually threw out and what we could salvage or break.  Best score: a big pile of mid 60s Playboy magazines.  The articles were good too.   Best lesson learned from a dead cow: Dont poke it if it doesnt stink. Best Time:  me and my buddies blasting a big pile of rotting tomatoes to a bloody splattering pulp with my dads old single shot Cooey shotgun (Got a lot of stuff out of your system out there)
-Finding a secret beach on the lake and camping out with the guys.
-Sitting on the furnace register as long as you could to super heat yourself before you had to go wait for the bus at -40.
Thinking that the absolute coolest thing you could have was a speedometer and a headlight on your bike.  Got the speedometer but never got the headlight so I had to ride really fast past the darkest part of the neighbourhood so the monsters wouldnt get me. I recall the speedometer was made in France and cost10.00.  I put about 400 miles on that summer. If I remember right I managed to get up to about 30 miles an our on the old CCM single speed one time.

Wow, once you get started the memories really come back.  What a great childhood and no wonder Im still fighting to stay in it!

Being able to change a bicycle tire in about 5 minutes
Going to Canadian Tire to get that bicycle tire and wanting more accessories for my bike
(I got one of those big orange flags)
Collecting Star Wars cards
Being jealous when the kid two doors down got a complete uncut sheets of hockey cards and Star Wars cards.

Burning things with a magnifying glass

Building model cars and finally learning how much better they turn out if you painted them with spray paint and not with a brush!

Being sent home from school early due to a snow storm and not being able to see 10 feet in front of you during that walk home.

Taking pop bottles back to the store and using the proceeds for candy.

A few of my favorites from the days at the service station out in the boonies by Falcon Lake
Going for that first ride in Dad's towtruck, 67 Mercury 1ton, at age 10 and being allowed to turn on the beacon.
Learning to pump gas, check oil, wash windows, you know the service in service station
Helping Dad build the bigger tow truck, 68 C500 Ford
Driving and towing cars around the lot and out to the back compound in same truck at age 12
Being allowed to 'Hold the fort' while dad was out on a tow call, how many 12 year olds would you let do that now.
Shooting old bottles off the roof of a wrecked mid sixties plymouth wagon with a .22
Drivin my 'Rat Patrol', a 62 IH 1 ton panel 4x4 that had rolled, we cut the roof and doors off
Swaping an engine in a 73 Vega GT,by myself at 13, stock 4cyl
