restoring older tools


hey guys i would love to if there is a way to get the shine and dark spots out of older tools here is the story i never knew my grand father and my grand mother wanted me to have his tools after i bought the car she gave me a bunch of old tools i would like to fix them all upsmile Just Because there very special to me

Ya,i find steel wool shines up metal and dosn't damage the finish,also jewlery cleaner works sometimessmile

Patina..... is everything when it comes to old tools Jonathan!!! Love them just the way you get them!! If there is some suface rust, steel wool will smooth it up nicely as The Captain mentioned above!!!

I still have some of my grandfather's tools. My favorite is a square that I use when doing decks and fences, it is made of steel, wood and  brass. You have to admire something that can still do the job it was designed for some 60+ years later.

I use muriatic acid to clean old metals. No spinning or rubbing, but dangerous fumes and other hazards involved. Its very cheap to buy at Canadian Tire. I agree with leaving the patina on tools.  It scares me when someone works on anything of mine and is using brand new tools.
