HELP, We sold a water pump to a customer with a 283 in a 57 Pontiac Starchief. Just a SBC short waterpump correct? Wrong, the pulley mounting flange is 1/4 inch closer to the block. What do we do now? Any ideas? Thanks Roger
well if it was mine I am sure I would have worked it out, but we sold the pump ( a chrome pump) to a customer at the store where I work part time(Performance Improvements, Oshawa).I was affraid if I told the guy to try and press the flange on farther, that he might screw up the bearings or mechanical seal inside the pump. The problem is his pullies dont line up now. the upper pulley needs to go in further by about 1/4 to 3/8 of an inch. He cant shim the lower pulley out because he says the pulley is riveted to the harmonic balancer. I might get him to try and drill out the rivets, tap the rivet holes out to a 5/16 NF thread and then shim the lower pulley out the required distance. Thanks for the help guys, Roger
It was quite easy on mine. I just removed the back cover, supported the back (bottom) of the shaft and kept pressing, fitting, pressing, fitting until my pulleys lined up. Took some time but not hard to do.
I would not shim the pulley because the next problem then is any other pulleys (alternator, power steering etc.)

If he shimmed the lower pulley out to align with the water pump, then we could modify the alternator brackets to suit, or we could shim the Alt. fan pulley out accordingly. Roger
