Attention Manitoban's.....

To all Manitobans

FYI.....

Autopac is planning on implementing a new policy of preventing any cars without T.O.D.'s ever getting registered .( They will be essentially parts only in the future)

There is a memo that has been sent to all Autopac outlets informing them of this upcoming change. I know some people are getting TOD's right now for all their field cars  ( project cars) . Not sure when this change is to occur, but it may be very soon

The days of finding a "barn find " (with no ownership documents), and putting it back on the road are now over.

What a shame

Wow.

Thanks Howard. I have a Nova I imported from the US 3 years ago that I have been putting off getting a TOD because I have to pay the tax on it when I do. I guess I will have to just do it. Not a big deal, just was trying to defer the tax for a while.

That's Autopac's second bright move this year after declaring all write offs older than 95 as being scrap........

I won't get into politics but we've voted one way for a long time and it's been WAY TOO long.

Stuff like this is ridiculous. It gains nothing and hurts the economy. Less hot rods being built = less money spent on car parts.

Saskatchewan let the word out that they would be doing the same thing, ALL vehicles without former paper registration or active in their database would be subject to an Inspection at your expense.

I bounced a plate across 6 of my field cars at that time, every day I transfered to a 'new' field car.

It never came into effect, good thing is I now have a paper trail for my field cars.

this was about 8 years ago??

Better get my a$$ in gear to get the TOD for my car.
Anyone have some tips on the easiest/fastest way to get a TOD?
I know we talked about this at one of our meets but can't remeber the best procedure to go about it.

I just went and got mine done for my Biscayne. Took only 15 minutes to do. Just make sure you have the sellers address on the bill of sale, I didn't have it on the bill of sale and had to put it on.

Thanks for the warning Howard.

Carl you can just put storage insurance on it and that way you don't have to pay the tax. When you register the car for use on the road then you pay the tax. This is what I just did and did not have to pay the tax.

Yes, I have storage on it but I'm concerned that if I don't get a TOD my chance may pass.

What's a "TOD"? An ownership as we Ontarians call it?

I asked the people at MPI ( 2 different locations) when I went there today and they heard nothing of this. But I needed to get it done anyways.

All I can say is if you wreck a car and it has clear title pull the tags and keep them for the future. That sounds like a joke that they are imposing that law. We don't have title docs in BC as insurance and title are the same thing. It's still a pain now. They really have it out for the older cars.

A friend of mine has a girlfriend that works at an Autopac outlet and this is what she said is coming down. She mentioned the memo came out last week

I have no physical proof (such as a hard  copy ) yet . But.... judging what this government run institution is doing lately , (example  turning any 94 and older "write off" cars immediately into scrap) , I would tend to believe this may be true.

Perhaps , we can have this verified by other sources.

I know of many stories in the last years where some Winnipeg - urban Autopac outlets would not even accept Bill of Sales , and in my case they would not even accept a gov't issued Auopac registration from 1983 . ( I had to get the elderly owner to re-register their own car after 26 years ...That way it would then show up in Autopac's system so they could recieve order the more modern TOD document , which I could then use to register the car.)

Nothing would surprise me this Autopac's mentality

Rural outlets however always seem to be more friendly , and cooperative .

I had to go on MPI and check it for myself And they do flag everything parts only 94 and older as I found some 95  salvage titles. I knew about their "two write off" rule being flagged as parts only. The sad thing about parts only is that once it is flagged, it is flagged nation wide. Most of the vehicles that are written off  and not parked due to age are not worth fixing any way and are still a long way off from being antique or collecter car status.

I wonder if I ever moved to Manitoba if I would have troulble registering older vehicles. Maybe some of you can get your antiques registered out of province and "import" them to Manitoba.
