Ever see a 400 Malibu??

What is a Malibu 400?

The Malibu 400 is a variation of the Chevelle Malibu built from 1970 to 1972. From 1965 to 1969, if Chevrolet customers wanted to order a Chevelle with a big-block engine through the normal Chevrolet dealer ordering process, they had to order the SS package. In other words, aside from cars ordered through special channels (e.g. the COPO order process), there were no non-SS Chevelles built with big-block engines. That all changed during the 1970 model year, when Chevrolet made available the LS3 big-block engine for installation in any Chevelle except SS models. This included all Malibu models, from station wagons to four-doors to convertibles, as well as base model Chevelles. The LS3, referred to as the "400 Turbo Jet" engine, actually displaced 402 cubic inches.

I HAVE SEEN A COUPLE OF THOSE FOR SALE OVER THE YEARS. NEAT CARS. I SAW A NON-SS '69 NOVA WITH A 396 IN A MAGAZINE NOT TOO LONG AGO, A REAL SLEEPER IN WHITE PAINT. NEVER KNEW YOU COULD GET A NON-SS BIG BLOCK NOVA, THE ARTICLE SAID THERE WAS A "HANDFUL" BUILT.

After 1970, you could get whatever you wanted, almost. I always thought that they were 402s, but still sold as 396s.

My cousin had a 71 Malibu 400 that had a 402 BB in it. It was a plain looking light green bench seat ho hum kinda car. It wasn't very fast as I recall.

Somewhere on here a while back there was a very good thread on here about Malibu 400's. Lots of good information on them showed up at that time.

I'd search but my luck searching here seems to suck big time.

65camino and I met a fellow with one. He was shocked when I knew exactly what it was, said I was the first person he ever met who knew. He mentioned that most people think it is a 400 sbc until he opens the hood and revals the 402 bad boy.

It is a plain bench seat car column shift that light green with dark green vinyl top. Made in California.

I don't think the car was ever identified as a Malibu 400 but rather a Malibu with a 400. I found a 70 Chevelle 300 400, now that sounds wierd, a 300 with a 402 4 gear, light green rubber floor mat bench seat 4 gear posi , radio delete as it was ordered new by a young mennonite fellow and they were not allowed to have a radio , pop bottle lids etc..., but a friend bought the car and built a SS clone with a 427 from another friend on this site ... and I think it was a pontiac block

I think a lot of these cars were cloned into SS's. I agree with Elroy on the name. Have a look at this fender....

Thats a really cool example Fred. Would be the same car without the radio and fancy wheels! Man we had no idea how rare those cars were back in the day !

Nice decal.

If anyone is wonder why this post is tagged 14,000 it's because C2 is bragging about being the number one poster on board, over 14,000 now.

That is quite an accomplishment !

s there such a thing as a Malibu 400 small-block?

Occasionally the question arises as to whether 70-72 Chevelles were ever equipped with 400 small-block engines from the factory. Although the small-block 400 was released in 1970 and installed in full-size Chevys, there is no documentation that this engine was ever installed in
70-72 Chevelles. So, every legitimate Malibu 400 started out as a big-block-equipped car.
