I have been looking fro 6 years Pascal, I'm not looking crazy but I would love to get rid of my 2.73's. GTO's came with the 3.42 as standard in '73 and the 3.08's were optional on all other Pontiac A bodies but of course try to find one of those as well.

Good candidates are Cutlass Supremes since a good number of these came with 455 and posi, Safari wagons as well since the 400 was standard in them.

..... and Ventura's, Nova's, Omega's, Skylarks...............  "X" bodied cars. I installed 3:42 gears in my '75 Ventura that came out of a late '80's pick up.. But mine was the # carrier!

I've got a whole 4.10 posi centre section if that interest you Pascal!

Of course, my son says it's not for sale because he thinks it would be cool in his LT1 Roadmaster!

No trying to be contrary but Pascal 4.11's in your car would be ridiculous. I don't know what your gasoline budget is but man going from a 2.56 to a 4.11 ?  I am sure someone can figure out what RPM's you'd be turning at 60 mph but I bet it would be close to 4,000 or better.

Now in the Roadmonster it wouldn't be too bad with the overdrive, might be fun, might be the thing to do Carl!

Plenty of trucks out there with the 8.5 diff.  If you can pick up the posi unit you could just swap into your open dif housing.

Why not just buy a posi and gears? Sure it would be more money but you'd be driving it before you ever found an axle!!

Another car to look at for a direct fit is the 78-84 Olds 98 & 88. This rear end bolts right in to 73 - 77 A-bodies but I think most of them have 2.73 but you could always change the gear out. I just put one in my 73 Cutlass.

IMG_1537.JPGIMG_1538.JPGWell I bought the 1973 Grand Am parts car today...comes with the original rebuilt 455 that they left without spark plugs installed and no air cleaner over 2 years (you guessed it..the motor's seized now!) honeycomb wheels, a nice crackless nose and grilles, posi rearend... here are a couple pics. It must have been a beautiful car in its days silver with red cloth interior.

Identical twin to the one I bought in the 80's with the 455. Cool...

Got the car home yesterday...took the cover off the diff. to find a broken posi unit dam !!! The 455 torque monster destroyed it, the loose spider gears pin elongated the hole in the case real bad. LOL ! It has a nice set of 3.31 gears at least and they are still in good decent shape.

Reading from the chart on page 4 of the 1973 AMA Specifications Form, dated September 1972 for the Pontiac LeMans and Grand Am  the  455 V8 was rated at 250 HP with 370 lb. ft torque, Turbo Hydramatic was the only available transmission and the axle ratios are listed as 3.23 with 3.08 for A/C cars.

In terms orf other Grand Am ratios, the 400 4bbl was 3.42 with 3.23 for A/C, the 400 2bbl was 3.08 for both A/C and non A/C.

Maybe the gears got changed over the years...says 43 13 on the ring gear, makes it 3.31.
