Salvage titled cars from the US

I`m looking at a 65 2dr Chevelle wagon located soth of the boarder. It has a salvage title, from what I read you can get the salvage title clear if you do all repairs and have it checked by Canadian Tire Goverment approved location. Problem is that you have only one year to do it.

I believe that is all true, providing you import it correctly.

If it's imported wrong, it's a parts car. I haven't made that mistake, but my brother has first hand experience...

I f you bring it in with the wrong paper work it is parts and title is removed. In NY they have all the time they need to rebuild the car and then have it checked, 1 year just would not be enough time.

as a bodyshop owner, ther is a big difference between salvage, and branded. a branded title works the way you described, but with no time limit. with a salvage title, it is ALMOST impossible to reverse that. there are VERY few that can make that happen. you really have to know the right people, and an awfull large amount of 'grease' to lube those wheels.

or swap the vin from a parts wagon onto it... and a perhaps a few parts to make it somewhat ethical. Where does it end? People do frame swaps quite often...

I have read the Canadian Import regs. and it says the car is exempt from the items you are concerned with....only applies to 1985 and newer...

RIV Program Exemptions

49. Vehicles are "exempt" from complying with the CMVSS

at the point of entry into Canada if they are imported under

one of the following conditions:

(a) the vehicles are 15 years old or older, or are buses

manufactured before January 1, 1971; the importer

must be able to demonstrate the age of the vehicle;

I would like to Import a Vehicle to Canada that is over 15 years old

 

If the vehicle you are planning on purchasing from the United States and Importing into Canada,  that is 15 years old or older, you are not required to pass the RIV program that regulates Canadian vehicle safety specifications. Thats right! No vehicle modifications, no fees. If you are planning on picking the vehicle up with a trailer, importing your 15 year old + vehicle should be basically hassle free.

You will have to produce a bill of sale, the vehicles title and pay your provincial taxes when you go to register it in your province

When I imported my 1971 Ventura II from Washington U.S.A. 
I sent in the Title to U.S.Customs  (faxed it) 
We loaded up the car in Port Huron  and drove to "U.S. Customs" at bridge...  

Waited a "hour" to get title "stamped".. 

Crossed bridge to Canada Customs 
Officer opened door to read Vin (1971)   

I went inside with "stamped" Title     Officer said "I didn't need it stamped" on a old car ... I just want your tax  lol     10 minutes to fill form and pay GST (at that time) and we were gone!!  No one even looked in trunk or our truck hauler.....

So I don't think "Canadian government" cares what you do with that 1965 car!!!!!!!

True, I forgot about the age limit.

I have imported newer as well and was warned ahead of time to do it right on the newer one!

No safty for cars 15 years and older with a clear title. Being salvage it is a whole new ball game. I`ll make the trip to the boarder and ask in person before buying

I still don't think they care, what the title says,   If it 15 years or older.........

Wasn't there a post on this regarding that Conv. Corvette. It was a Salvage title and could never be registered again......It had something to do with flood damage!! I will find the MTO post, but with an older vehicle maybe it changes????

D. Out-of-Province Vehicles
1. My vehicle has a brand in another jurisdiction. Now I want to register it in Ontario. What will happen?

Vehicle brand information from other Canadian or US jurisdictions will be carried forward when these vehicles are registered in Ontario with the exception of the "Rebuilt" brand. Imported vehicles with a Rebuilt designation or its equivalent from other Canadian or US jurisdictions will be registered as "Salvage" in Ontario thus requiring them to undergo a structural inspection to ensure that the vehicle has been properly repaired before being branded as "Rebuilt" in Ontario.

2. My vehicle has been branded in another jurisdiction and identified as having fire and/or flood damage.
Now I want to register it in Ontario. What will happen? NEW

Ontario has expanded its recognition of brands for imported vehicles. The brand of irreparable will be applied to all imported branded vehicles previously identified with fire or flood damage regardless of the brand identified on the title. For example, if a customer has a Certificate of Title or other acceptable proof of registration with a brand of salvage and a description of flood damage or fire damage, it must be branded as irreparable.


It appears if the SALVAGE TITLE isn't branded flood or fire damage, you might be OK.....

be very leary, i purchaced 9 police dodge magnums from hurricane catrina. all were branded salvage.here,s where it get interesting, i boughtt a 70 426 cuda, a tree fell on it. i bought a 69 427 copo camaro, that a garage fell on. all cars were branded as salvage. the 9 magnums were a breeze. all flood damage. the 2 classics cost me about 2k a piece to get the salvage tags removed. only because i know the right people. its almost like they make the rules up as they go. be carefull. i had a buddy go into bankruptcy from a few wild yankee deals just like this. he was stuck with classics, that he couldnt move. just my 2 cents.......

Jeez, you don't want to that, a guy I knew way back in the late 70's did that & the RCMP caught up to him a few mths. later. Car he bought was driven across to our side with a "fur sail" sign on it, Customs noted the plate,it never returned, RCMP started checking lic. tranfers of that model car, " NAILED" him, he took a VIN plate of a parts car he had [same yr. diff. model] hauled his sorry "A$$" right out of work, cost him a fortune in court costs then more$$$ to get the car back. May have got away with it if the parts car had already been in his name, but your playing with FIRE" when you touch the VIN tag!!!!!

Do all your homework and make all the phone calls in triplicate! I would stay away from any salvage, rebuilt title, anything, unless you can look and verify the vehicle in person.  I have seen/worked on both new and old vehicles from the states that sluffed through the system. It became a repair night mare for the owner.

Don't forget you have to contend with your local jurisdiction as far as inspections go not only the federal canadian tire. In Sask we can't get around an inspection until the vehicle is thirty years old unmodified and older than 1958 modified. Once a vehicle is flagged in one jurisdiction it is flagged right across the country.

Make sure you know what you are doing before signing the checque!

Car is just a few hours from me and is not damaged. A few areas of rust with a solid frame. All trim and glass, just no drive line or front clip, asking $2000. So close and yet so far till I figure the salvage title out.

salvage title is dated 2005. I think if you took them to an auto wreckers they got salvage titles. Maybe theft recovery
