Can you get the stamping off the block in front of the right head and casting off the block behind the drivers' head?

I'd guess that engine is a 1962 as it has a road draft tube or "stink pipe" as we used to call them back on PEI.

Judging by the stamping and the shifter, I'd guess at the Chevelle...

That 283 will have witch hat heads if it's a truck or passenger car motor and double bumps if it's a vette. Also check the casting date on the motor with the casting on the heads, and the intake. This will verify that the motor was built as you see it. They should all be close. If you give me a part number off the shifter I can tell you what it's out of. I am thinking it's a 64 chevelle motor 195 HP.

GLH is right about the road tube,a 1963 motor has a PCV system this block pictured might have a starter bolting into the castiron M35 [last used in 1962in full sized chevys] to use with an aluminum PG you have to drill & tap the block to mount a upward bolting starter

I thought you were talking about the oil fill tube in the intake manifold instead of the cap in the valve cover, but my '66 had the same oil fill tube in the intake manifold. So evidently, they were still around after '64.

Are you talking about something else?

If you check the picture of the right side of the engine you will see a tube behind the distributor. It comes out of the block and runs down to the bottom of the engine near the starter. This setup was used until 1962 and was replaced with a PCV system starting in 1963. Initally the PCV system was connected to the same hole in the block but was changed to the valve cover in 1968. This engine has a cast iron Power Glide attached that was last used in 1962 so it's probably 1962 or older.
