Rear window defrost

How common is rear window defrost and did they offer it in 66' Acadians or 69' Camaro's? I was buying parts for my wifes 69' Camaro and the fella had this rear window defog setup with a fan and the grill , he said it came out of his 69' Trans Am . Was this option very common ?

More so in Canada than the US. I have sold some to the US and in at least one case, the buyer from California was ecstatic. He told me he'd been looking for a couple of years.

I don't think the 69 and 66 units are the same if you are asking that.

I recall my father taking his 1970 Pontiac in to the dealer to have the rear window blower installed shortly after buying the car new.  My first car a 75 Monza did not have this either so I set up a fan in the hatch back area. It worked not bad but I finally got a heated grid kit from Canadian Tire and that worked very well. I'm searching my memory bank and I think the first car I recall having the heated grid was the 1976 Grand LeMans. As for my '73 it has a blower and I was lucky to spy one in a salvage yard in a 73 Buick Skylark that was the same style and colour so I took it.

Or an option as well I think Ken. Either way.

My GM accessories catalogues list them for many years, as you say.

The blower could be either factory installed or dealer installed, both my 73's were factory but 70 was dealer as described.

Both my '75 Grand Am's have the factory installed heated rear window, both have factory tinted glass as well. On my coupe all the lines still work, very common for one or several lines to get broken. Usually damaged by something on the parcel shelf or by cleaning the window. Never tried the defoster on the sedan yet.

I have one for sale in the forsale section,  should be correct for 69 camaros? fits later 60s and early 70s.  They were teh same on many GM cars of that era.

I find they are common on sask and alberta cars.  Have not seen to many here  in manitoba.

I have been useing mine everyday for the past week with all this snow.
In my 67 beaumont, sure does work nice. I'm glad i installed one for the winter!

Thanks for all the input guy's. I noticed on the 66' that the shelf has the necessary cut out to accept the blower. On the 69' Camaro the cut out is on the pass side on the Acadian it's in the middle ?

So ...my parts car came with a rear defroster fan and it was in very good shape and I tested it and it works like new, and I plan on putting it in my car. The question I have is...the switch for it was just a toggle mounted under the dash below the key, was there a factory switch for these fans like the rear speaker switch that mounts under the dash pad?

I have repaired these breaks several times. The kit is available at Canadian Tire, about $10. It works well. My Suburban has 4 patches in it but once patched they work. My Deville has two patches and still working. Somehow the oldest car, my Fleetwood has avoided having the grid damaged confuse and works like new.

yes, it looks the same as a speaker fader or power top switch.
But since they were often dealer installed, i have seen a lot of different styles.

I have a whole defogger kit but I'm saving it. In case you haven't heard, I'd like to find a 66 GP and buy it...
