Saw a cool car tonight

I've had in my possession for quite a few years a package of receipts and appraisals for a 66 Mustang. I don't know how I got it, or why, but last week I called the guy who's name was on the appraisal about 13 years ago to ask if he owned a Mustang. He said he used to, but had sold it. He lives in Fort McMurray. I told him about the paperwork I had, and would he like it? He said yes and I told him I'b be in Fort McMurray this week.
Tonight I took it over, and we chatted for a couple of minutes. I asked him if he was still into cars, and he said yes, want to see what I've got now? So we hustled out to the garage and uncovered a 1980 turbo Trans Am Pace Car with just 3,000 kilometers. This looked showroom fresh, and had the typical build quality of the time. It was bought new at Smyl GM in St. Paul, Ab. by a 65 year pld guy who only used it in parades. After he died the car went up for sale a few years ago, and this fellow bought it.
He has all the paperwork, including the little stuff on the visors etc. Still protective plastic on the floor. Seat cushions are absolutely unmarred and undented. A real time capsule.
He had just got home, so didn't have a lot of time, but I have one photo!  Sorry, I took it with my phone!

those T/A have always been striking !

A guy I know here had one that he babied,,,that is until he rear ended a RV trailer on the highway and then down a light standard with the passenger side......

thank goodness he was the only one in the car, they all walked away , hard to believe when I seen the car.

the car in your pic ,,is rarer by one....

I love those. They weren't great as far as power goes, but they were still fun to drive and look GREAT.

I started my GM parts career Nov 1980 and of course those were what attracted attention in those days.

I did so many warranty decal replacements on Trans Ams, Z28's, Royal Knights, Monza Spyders, and Corvette pace cars for the GM dealers in greater Vancouver in those days. Crazy!

believe it or not, my 81 Citation X-11  2.8l V6 4 speed could take one of those 80 Turbo Trans-Am's.

Not fast at all but very cool. The concept was right but the combination was wrong. They got it figured out 9 years later when they installed the GNX engine in the GTA and called it TTA pace car for Indy.

yup, I bought it about a month before I graduated college - red with a black interior (they must not have been selling well as it was a new 81, and I bought it in Apr 82 - thank-you Trudeau and the NEP).   It was commonly referred to as Clint's Chevy Cruiser.    I could get good rubber doing speed shifts into 2nd.

Geez Clint I have almost the same story. My 81 sat in the corner of the dealer's basement overflow showroom from July 1981 until I bought it in March of 1982.

It took about 4 days to PDI the car because they had to order front suspension pieces and seals and what not that had given up over that 9 month period. being so young and being my first new car I never even asked to drive it. It cost just over $10,000.

One of the first things I did was take the Gold Bowtie off the front grille, it just didn't "look" like the rest of the car. Early on in ownership the AIR pump and system fell off and the exhaust manifolds got replaced with a set of hooker headers and a 3 inch diameter straight pipe down the centre of the car to a dual outlet muffler at the very rear. These cars had a high lift cam and dual-jet with dual snorkle air cleaner with solenoid activated Cowl Induction hood. Lots of torque steer and rubber. It cornered like it was on rails too.

The XII could keep company with all of the factory muscle cars of that era and the Car mags really gave it top reviews.

Welcome back to Forgotten Sporty Cars, where The Garage recalls some of the sporty runabouts of the past. Who here can recall the Citation? It seems old and boring today, but when Chevy introduced the car in 1980, it was a radical design and packaging departure for the General. Aimed squarely at bread and butter middle class folk, yes. But Chevy did offer something spicy in the X-11.

Chevy wanted to take the Citation SCCA racing, and the X-11 was their ticket. In 1980, the car featured front and rear stabilizer bars, a rear spoiler, full instrumentation and other sporty bits. Buyers could choose from a 2.5L four-cylinder, or a 2.8L 115hp V-6 coupled to either a 4-speed manual with overdrive or a 3-speed automatic. In 1981, the V-6 boasted 135hp, which gave the X-11 a 0-60mph time of 8.5 seconds, which was very good for 1981. Later X-11s had lesser torque, due to emission controls

I know we've hi-jacked this thread, but the gold chevrolet emblem on the X-11 partially obscured the radar detector I had hidden in the grill.  It was a non-
A/C car, so the interior display was hidden in the vent opening by the drivers side window (I'd taken out the blank plate, and made it so it would swivel hiding the display if necessary).  

I also had a Concord AM/FM Cassette hidden in the console (that was at the time the Lamborghini Countach also sported a Concord instead of an Alpine), with it's amplifiers for the rear speakers hidden in there as well.  It actually was a good car, and somewhere around here I still have the auto magazine reviews.  I remember them saying the 4 speed was more of a "gear bag" than a "gear box".  It really should have had a 5 speed as there was quite a big gap between the 2nd & 3rd gear ratios.  The 3 years I lived in Ottawa didn't do the car any favors, as the salt took it's toll on the car.  I sold the car in March 90, and the kid that bought it really like the hidden radar detector and stereo in the console.

I only got one ticket driving that car, should have had plenty, it got traded in on a brand new 86 Monte Carlo SS in November 1985. That SS was ordered in late August and thats how long it took to arrive, car came on Nov. 10, 1985 about 10 weeks.

I'd hate to guess how many tickets I got in mine (probably a good 7 or 8).  I average a ticket a year, and if I recall the last one I got in the X-11 was when I was moving back from Ottawa to Calgary, I got one about an hour west of Ottawa.  

The car really cornered well, and I could take the ramp from Eestbound Glenmore Trial onto Southbound Deerfoot Trail at 100 kmph.   3/4 way through the ramp the surface changes from asphalt to concrete, and the car would jump sideways a couple feet.  I scared a few people at that spot.

I've done that too, Raced my own Monza 2+2 V8 with my BIL driving it, straight drag and the XII took the Monza, I edged back into the right lane (two lane hwy) blasted into a tight turn and it took it like you describe, my cousin was riding shotgun and we just look at each other and laughed, straight away and buried it, looked in mirror no Monza. My BIL told us later he went off the road on to the shoulder trying to corner with us. no
