Toronto's new Mayor Rob Ford just held his first press conference and delivered a clear and decisive speech outlining his plan for the City for the next 4 years. It is music to the ears of most right leaning Torontonians and Canadian's in fact.
In his speech he declared the War on the Car over as of today !!!! He vowed to repeal Mayor Millers $60 per car tax effective January 1, 2011 and said Transit City is dead,
He also said he was elected with broad base support on a number of issues and things he said. He said he is going to do those things WOW refreshing politicians!
AM I GETTING THIS RIGHT, AT THIS POINT, YOU GUYS IN TORONTO ARE PAYING A TAX OF $60 FOR EACH CAR YOU OWN? WHAT IS TRANSIT CITY? ALSO RAY, DON'T FORGET ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS! SOUNDS LIKE HE IS OFF TO A GOOD START THOUGH.

$60 tax per car registered collected by Province and paid to City when licenses are renewed each year, Had that for at least three years now.
Transit City - Transit City is an initiative to build eight new Light Rail Transit (LRT) lines to neighbourhoods and areas currently not served by rapid public transit. These routes will reinforce the public transit focus of the City of Torontos Official Plan. Electrically-powered Light Rail Vehicles (LRVs) will travel in reserved lanes providing a smooth, fast and comfortable transit experience. Transit City routes will be accessible to customers with all levels of mobility and provide transit users with a high level of comfort and customer service. (from TTC website)
Basically a mega million dollar plan to put light rail transit corridors on existing arterial roadways, eliminating multi lane roadways. Basis in plan is founded in a social service mechanism to enable urban poor (remember Toronto's core is high dollar property inhabited by wealthy) to travel cheaply and efficiently from corner to corner of the city. Cost is out of reach and traffic disruption is infinite.
We've been paying that tax to the montreal transit authority for decades .... a punishment for not using it. I'd mind less if it was per person ... but I can only not drive one car at a time ... why punish me for the others that I wouldn't be using anyhow?
i won't get into the raping we take in the name of no fault insurance.
Ray, Too bad they got you last mth. for all the taxes, maybe you should have waited till Jan. 1st. I have to agree with Ford on doing the Subways, the light rail idea still has to deal with road traffic, signals, etc. Underground there's none of that, just there own signals. Only other way to do it would be bridge or tunnel at each crossing to keep the flow going!!! That's costly TOO!!!!

sounds like a BC tax tactic id be doomed if that ever came here,I like to have 4-5 cars on the road in the summer.Another example of overtaxation.....that would be a nice one to go away
It's a pretty good retirement income, that's my plan to run for office when I am 60 or so. By then I can say whatever I want and people won't mind, free shoe shines, free lunches, a barber on site at Queens Park plus you get driven around in big black cars with a body guard,I mean Chauffeur, and police escorts everywhere...no traffic jams!
Ray, fine is $115 + court costs & the other tax they hit you with, can't remember the name.[some sort of fund] Friend got nailed in his wifes van. Apparently, they can "scan" the bar code from behind, friend said not to worry his wife put the tag on the frt. plate, cop walked to the frt. & said "it's expired as well" & out came the pen & little book!!!!!
