Build it and they will come! Winter fun

Last week I returned home from work to find the kids working on a toboggan run in the backyard that goes down to a pond.  Looked like fun so I joined in the fun of building too.  Then I noticed a few kids trying to clean some of the ice on the pond for skating and shinny.  Well to say that I was "inspired" would be putting it lightly because I had an overwhelming urge to build a rink now.

I'd been planning on purchasing a snowblower anyhow, so now was the time.  This little 21" works wonders.  It has a 141cc two stroke that has a ton of hp, easy on gas, and starts 2nd pull or use electric start.  (It's wife friendly too).  It's my mini zamboni. biggrin

So, I start blowing snow off the ice with the intention of doing about a 1/4 of the pond because that will be plenty.  In places the snow is only an inch deep but most places its about 3" to 6".

And I continue to blow snow....

After 3 days of blowing snow for about 4hrs each day, (plenty of time to think) it was time to come up with a flooding device to smooth out the rough ice.  The one pictured is my second try. The first one had shorter material and smaller holes in the spraybar.

This is how it looked prior to flooding.

Takes no time at all to get the kids out playing shinny. It's getting used everyday...lots!

Here is after flooding the night before.  I would have done the rest of the ice but one of the pipes on the flooder broke.  I've built a new one out of different pipe now but haven't put it to the test.  We are getting a warm spell right now and it needs to be cold to flood.

Here's a few of my 5yr old stepdaughter the dog on the toboggan run.  She's a real brave little kid.  In the one picture she has some good air.  We iced up the run and made it really fast.  What a blast!biggrin  I'm crashing in another shot!

Wonder who the "airhead" is? LOL

Brave kid! smile

Thanks Mike for posting all that. Great fun and future memories. Is there anything better than a toboggan run and a frozen pond for a Canadian kid?

How can you do that to the environment and allow kids to participate in such unsafe activities.
I don't see any crash barriers, helmets, elbow pads, knee pads, mouth guards or ambulances.

You are disturbing the natural ecological balance of this area.
Did you get the correct permits, workers comp approval, tax assessments and community approval.

This runs counter to the kinder, gentler, safer green world that we are supposed to live in.

Way to go Mike thumbsup.gifthumbsup.gif

Fantastic! A true Canadian right there! Who knows.......some future NHL'er might start on that pond.  I have a large pond too,  its still open water, the kids are itching to play hockey!  With all those houses nearby, nobody came to help out?

Thanks Rick.  This is why I missed the banner signing, by the way.

I sure had a chuckle about the environmental and safety aspect of what you wrote.  As an oilfield consultant, that's all I hear about.  (I'm still a Canadian farm boy at heart)  I've been waiting for someone to complain but so far all is well.  Last Friday, a town employee was down on the ice checking things out and then beelined for our slide and investigated.  Hope they don't knock it down but I'm sure they don't want to be liable for any hurt kids on town property.  Hard to say though because we have some really nice neighbors and there are tons of kids in the area that are using the ice and the slides.  Kids started all this, I just helped them because I'm a kid stuck in a big body wink.  My tailbone is killing me doh

i work in a school and if the plows leave a hill of any kind behind they cancel recess, remember the days when it was lets play king of the hill, not no more, if they cancel recess you hear, yay accross the whole school, so pathetic. i built a tobaggan run in my backyard for my 2 and 4 year olds, there are kids in the school that don't know what tobagganing means. but mention video games or tv and there a wiz. and i love the run and rink you made, pretty awesome.

A little over 225ft of garden hose.  It's all rubber too!  Had 25ft of 5/8", bought 50ft of 3/4", bought another 100ft of 5/8", and borrowed 50ft of 5/8".  It's a big task getting it all out and then flooding for 3 hours and then putting it all away.  I've been sleeping just as good as the kids lately!

Good job there Mike. It's amazing how much pleasure can be attained from just one or sometimes two people giving some extra time and getting the ball rolling. As a kid that is all I ever needed for entertainment until they invented those snowmobiles. Glad you were the one who stepped up and made it happen.

Not one bit of help showed up from any of the houses.  Quite a few kids made a point of thanking me.  It really surprised me that no one else has stepped up to help out.  Not that I mind but it would be nice because I won't be home to do it all winter.

What does bother me a little is the fact that one guy on the opposite side of the pond  built a tiny little rink in his backyard that 2 kids can sort of play on.  If half of his effort was put towards working on the pond, 20 kids could play.  Often I see his kids penned in the yard while a game is going on the pond. Sad from my perspective.  I don't have a very good understanding of people because I just don't get this guys thinking. confuse

Maybe not, but I have an understanding of your thinking. It's pretty simple. You like to see people enjoy life and you enjoy doing doing things that make people happy.

Check this out, the local newspaper had an interest in what we did.   http://www.strathmoretimes.com/News/

Making winter a little better for the community kids

 story4-dec31.jpgstory4-dec31.jpg

Winter can be long and dreary, with kids having to spend more time in the house due to the chilly weather and a lack of outdoor activities. One Hillview couple have gone out of their way to provide entertainment for the kids in their community. Mike and Tamara Stevenson have cleared off a section of the lake behind their house for a skating rink and made a type of luge for tobogganing.
The biggest reason I would say that I clean it is, I just like seeing everybody out there having fun. I throw the skates on too and go out there, said Mike.
Last year he and his wife had tried to clear the pond a bit to make a skating area. He said they went out with their shovels to clear an area but it was too late in the year. The luge is something the Stevensons have made for a few years to help give their two children something to do.
This year I have a snow blower so I thought I would give them a hand and try it out, said Mike.
The first time they cleared and flooded the ice, it was after the big snow fall in late November. It took 12 hours, with two hours of that needed just to clear the ice for hockey.
We always make something back there for them to go sliding. It just got carried away this year and just got bigger and bigger.
He made a device, using 225 feet of hose, to flood the lake and spread the water evenly using their own house water. During the weekends kids and adults alike can be seen filling the ice and waiting in line to take their toboggan down the hill. Mike said there is a natural divide between the skating area and the sledding side because of the snow bank they made. Mike and Tamara can be seen out on the lake clearing the snow after every snow fall. The Stevensons also have a variety of toboggans that they leave out for the community kids to use.
I hope it inspires people around the pond to get out and do stuff and have fun. Its right there in our backyard, so why not? said Mike.
Mike said in January he will be back to work, so it will be hard for him to keep it up all winter. As long as they are able to keep clearing the snow and flooding the rink, the Stevensons plan to keep the luge and skating area maintained.
