I see you just missed the GM block casting number. Should be just under the big GM letters on the back of the block. You got a pic of the GM letters but not the casting numbers just under them. Will look like the numbers in the top left corner of the pic I posted .

Thanks for your patience, B4008, there is some sort of black fixed pipe obscuring the no's but managed to stick the camera down there and try to get some photos, with the attached composite - seems to be
2GM
376519 (!)

Sorry - 2GM 3756519

Well, 3756519 sure looks like it could be correct. Some searching shows 58-62 283.

Definitely a "T", so Tonawanda from the above list. The date code at the back of the engine is "12859" which (if it is simply dmy) is 12 August 1959 or if (mdy) 8 Dec 1959. I gues the laater if it US-made. There doesn't seem to be a VIN plate with body style colour anywhere and only Fisher Body on the plates by the bottom of the door sill.

Date code looks like A2859 , That would be Jan 28 59. That would go more with engine assy date if we think its  T217. (Feb. 17).   Block cast about 21 days before engine assy.  . Now if this block was assy just before your car assy date you would know if good possibility that was original to car.

The story of my 59 Strato Chief now in Auustralia is starting to be revealed. Alaister from South Africa saw photos and emailed me some photos of a Strato Chief that was rescued by a friend who started to do it up then sold it on.

Alaister wrote "That red Pontiac was photographed by a friend in Laingsburg (South Africa). He bought the car in Merveville (upstream) where it had been lying for years. It was a bit more rusty than it looks because although it lived in a really dry area it was under water in the big floods in about 1980 or 84. Laingsburg was destroyed. (do a internet search and you will see) Anyway he took it home and it went off to a panel and paint shop and was done. I will send some more pics of it then. He never did finish the car and sold it."

Then today "How is this for a chance!! I forewarded the pics of your Pontiac to the guy who fetched the rough red one that I sent you the pictures of.  He called me today to say it's the same car. Gerrit sold it to a guy in Woester (South Africa) who finished it off. He must have also swopped the straight 6 motor for the Chev V8. And he put those personalised plates onto the car. Gerrit is going to contact him and try and get an e-mail address for you so we can put you in contact. Might fill in a few missing details for you."

I can't wait! Gotta get some phtos of the resto! Can't wait!

Great follow up story on your 59. That's great that Alaister was able to get some more information for you.
