Boy does that bring back memories. When I was a kid every Sun. was a Trip from Toronto to Uxbridge to see my grandfather. We sometimes used to stop on Brock Rd. hop the fence into a field & put on the skates for a 1/2 hr or so, Great memories, thanks for putting these pics. up!!!

Love pond hockey ... except when you get hung up on your stick when you run full-tilt into the snow bank surrounding the ice! Ouch.

The secret is to get your rear end sooooo frozen so that you can't feel the pain when you fall flat on it.

I grew up on pond, lake and river ice skating. I still miss it. For 2 years we lived in Dartmouth Nova Scotia with Penhorn Lake in our backyard. I can still remember the sound of the ice settling and cracking at night. The reverberation would send chills up your spine and get you skating for the shoreline PDQ! After that we had a river thru our subdivision in Sackville Nova Scotia that I spent countless hours skating and playing hockey on. Fell thru a few times and once almost never made it out. That experience taught me a life lesson in 15 minutes that I never forgot. It's nice to see kids still skating outdoors instead of an arena. Thanks for posting the pic's Jet Fan.
Pond ice is the only ice I ever skated on as a kid. We shovelled it off one day and then invited our friends out for a game the next day. Sometimes the snowbanks were so heavy they would actually push down the ice and we would get an inch of water around the edges. We lived right beside Fairy Lake, biggest lake in Halton County at that time.
As others have said this just brings back so many good memories. Literally spent days on the pond. Would shovel snow all day Saturday for Sunday's game and then it would snow 6 inches overnight. Always shovelled with my skates on though and that was the best skating drill ever. Enjoy skating and playing hockey today as much as I did then.
Very Very good but hey we never used folding chairs, it was the one legged hop as you pried off your one boot and stuffed it in a skate , then repeated for the opposite side
growing up in Ottawa we used to take the bus down to Dows lake (Rideau canal) skate for a couple miles with your boots around your neck. when you got bored get off the canal and take a bus back home. early 20's used to carry a goat skin under my coat while skating. last year we went up to Ottawa for a skate on the canal, only difference was having a beaver tail.
I also had a part time job in high school, working at the shack at a public rink. it was a good job. open the shack after school. do my home work or skate. end of the evening flood the rink and go home.
Almost forgot , there's nothing like skating on "natural ice" if I remeber it's faster than the artificial ice???
Pond ice dulls your skates fast. As long as you keep skating on pond ice you are okay.
Have you ever went from pond ice to artificial ice between sharpenings? Your skates are so dull on the artificial ice, you are all over the place.

Very Very good but hey we never used folding chairs, it was the one legged hop as you pried off your one boot and stuffed it in a skate , then repeated for the opposite side
I remember beginners pushing kitchen chairs ahead of them to learn how to keep their balance when first on skates.
