65 Beaumont + tremec tko 600 =

One big mutha of a hole in the floor  cry

I decided this fall that the Beau needs an overdrive gear to keep up with my buddies on the highway. The 496 and me will be a bit happier cruising at 2000rpm instead of 3200 and up. I knew the tunnel would never be able to swallow that tranny and cutting was necessary, so it was not a surprise, but after you cut out most of the tunnel on a clean rust free floor it makes your  shake your head.

I have a new tunnel almost fabbed up now, still needs welding and adjusting but I think I am happy with how it looks. I draped my old carpet over it and it looks ok.
I will take a couple of pictures today and put them up here.
I am still playing with the tranny trying to get a good driveline angle and still have room for the driveshaft to clear the floor further back. It is a very tight fit.

The new tunnel will be butt welded to the existing sheet metal. I am just waiting for a new shifter hump tp graft onto the new tunnel

This where these Kelico fasteners would come in handy!!! Nice job on floor, a couple of places to "fill" in & should be good to go!!!Picture 016.jpg

You missed a bit or two.

Clecos are only good for lap joints. He said he's going to butt weld it. I've got a bunch of them from Dad, when he used to work on aircraft .... damn glad to see them finally taking their rightful place in the automotive field.

Wow. That does it for me. I can't believe how much you had to cut. Thankyou for posting it. Unless they make a lower profile trans it won't go in one of my cars. Are you using a console? Will it fit?

Will a custom hump like that effect carpet fit?

You'll have to spend some time with a heat gun to loosen up the carpet to fit, but it's workable.

looks good!  if you are building a driver...  not restoring a original car

Even an original car has to be a driver . Mine is hardly original. It is meant to drive and enjoy. If I had an all original, like Kelico's on this site for example, I wouldn't have done this either.

As it ended  up I could have cut a bit less but it was hard to tell how much I really needed until I had the tunnel cut open to raise the tranny to the best position.
If I had a console I still could have made the new tunnel work designed a bit different
My chances of finding a good console are slim to none  and I really don't mind the way it is now. I had a M22W in the beau for the last few years but with 3.73's any extended highway cruising got tiresome. I think I am spoiled from driving the newer vehicles we do now that cruise effortlessly on the highway with 4th and 5th gears.

I laid the old carpet over just to see what it will look like and it looks good. You actually can't really tell the tunnel in about 2" higher. If the new molded carpet I ordered is like the last few I have dealt with they fit so poorly on the tunnel anyway.

Jerry your work looks great and if I didn't post that I wanted to see how a 5 spd would fit in a 65 beaumont I wouldn't have said what I did in your post. I still have photos of your car in my collection and it's a true hot rod 65. It's one of my favorites. Thankyou for posting it but it's not what I want to do with my 65 4 spd car.

Yep, didn't see the butt weld note there but saw he had the "tunnel" screwed to the floor in 2 places [or rivets?] so took it from there!!!!   OOPs

I've done it this way a time or two .... get the bits fitting overlapping ... weld up all the bits in place so that you've got one solid piece .... then use a body saw or cut off wheel to slice it leaving you with perfectly matching lines and a perfect gap for welding.

This makes the gear vendor OD a mighty appealing option... it's pricey, but other options can add up pretty quickly!

Here's a link to the GV Under/Overdrive,

http://www.gearvendors.com/hrgm4sm.html

I've read articles about these. They're supposed to be bullet proof. Turns a 4 speed in to an 8 speed!

How did you grind in your car without wrecking anything? Looks good by the way. What a ton of work eh? I should have those photos for you today.

Paul, in the past I have taken a big Princess Auto tarp and pulled it over me like a tent for welding and grinding. It has worked excellent. Unfortunately, I learned the hard way on a different car when I pitted a 1/4 glass real bad, working uncovered.

I use a welding blanket in the car and a flapper wheel for cleaning off the welds. Flapper wheels work great for this. They create less heat and keep the grindings to basically a dust.
Yep Paul, a fair bit of work, but that is what I enjoy on these old cars. When it comes right down to it, I enjoy doing things like this as much as driving it.

Besides, it has been friggin cold here, and the garage is nice and warm.
