Full Size GM Zone Cars

Ok I'll take the bull by the horns.

The Chinese '68 Parisienne thread has brought several GM zone cars to light.

Were these cars always the most loaded top of the line vehicles?

What have we got out there? 68SD? C1?

Im not sure if we are talking about the same things, but

I have a 64 beaumont 2dr post sedan.
The GM docs state the dealer as  "winnipeg GM zone product stock"

Its a plain car, black w/red interior.  6cyl auto

I only have experience with the one, the 69 Grande Parisienne 4 dr ht. Sadly, I have no pictures, nothing, just going by memory. I may still have a VIN somewhere. I bought it off a family friend. He bought it off the local jewelery store owner. The store owner bought it off the Pontiac dealer I worked for from 1980-1985. That dealer got it from Winnipeg Zone after the zone manager put on the mandatory miles, 5,000 or something like that?

427/335 hp
TH400
12 bolt 2.56 posi
Climate control air
Cruise
Power
Disk brakes
AM/FM stereo with floor mounted 8 track
Power windows
Power trunk
Power locks
Power seat

No tilt, no power antenna, no rear sway bar. I am not positive but it seems to me it had been built with level control (unhooked when I got it) and I can't recall for sure but I would guess speed warning as well, or???

The twin to this car, option for option it appears, colour and all, resides near Regina with a private collector.

I recall seeing on TV a program that chronicalled Pierre Trudeau's political life (some love him, some dispise him). Waiting for him at the curb was a procession of all black brand new1974 Canadian Chevrolet Bel Airs and Pontiac Laurentians (not even top of the line).

68sd, as usual, you are the man!

And you too C1!

Cam, CISIS and the RCMP have always run fleets of new full sized cars around Ottawa to shuttle dignitaries from one place to another as long as I can remember. Currently they are using the last of the Grand Marquis, all black, there are quite a few around town here and they all have stealth emergency lights all round like the unmarked Crown Vics you see. In earlier days Caprice Classics were the car of choice for this duty. Likely all have cop car underpinnings. Go back to any historical pictures of the G-8, G-7, G-Whatever meetings and you always see fleets of these things.

But, I would not consider these zone cars.

A little off topic but there are also a couple of bombproof Cadillac stretch limos around, they look weird around the windows like a Brinks truck. The Israeli embassy has one!

My "Chinese" Parisienne has (had) 2 amber lights (they actually look like vintage Crappy Tire specialsbiggrin) mounted behind the front grill and running to a separate flasher unit.
I was wondering what that was all about. Nothing really fancy.

They remind me of those purple under the dash "love lights" that were around when I was younger.wink

They could be lights for running in diplomatic convoy.

These days they have the hi-tech hi beams and indicators flashing with the removable red light on the roof - just like Kojak used to have on his Buick Century.
