It was a year ago today that Hillar logged onto Canadian Poncho for the last time. I believe he passed away the same day or not long after. For those of you who are newer members, Hillar was a stalwart supporter of the website (and the old car hobby) and often offered intriguing insights and opinions to different aspects of our hobby. The site hasn't been the same without him.

Indeed, he is missed. I called his father on December 30th to chat. That was the last day in 2009 I saw him alive as he had dinner at our home. Come to think of it he left at 2:00 am December 31st, New Years Eve morning, after a night of good festive spirit laughing and joking, a few rants and he and I drank the better part of a bottle of Glenfiddich.  biggrin

Hillar was the guy that told me about Canadian Ponchos. We must have talked for a good 2 hours at the car show on the Queensway. He sure loved his cars and the site he told me that I will meet alot of nice car guys on the site, and he was right.Iwish I would have had a chance to meet and talk to him again. RIP and one day we,ll all meet in the end.

That has been a very fast year.

I had someone ask me last night ( a newer member) and I was happy to explain the type of person I viewed Hillar as. Althought I never spoke in person with him, our converstations on and off the forum led me to believe he was the kind of person you'd be happy to call friend.

Wow, a year since his untimely passing. In 2009 I was truly looking forward to meeting him in person. It was only recently I realize that I actually did chat with him back in 1992 about his 1970 Cutlass with the hopped up six under the hood. A real car guy for sure. Thanks for your contributions, mate!

Hillar was a real good guy, and I miss talking to him.  We'd talk about cars, the adventures of Ontario & Toronto policits and "Mad Men", our favorite show.  He stayed out our place in 2009 when he came out to look at the Green/Gold 70 2+2 he purchased from me.

Every now and then I'll read his posts. It's like he's still should be here. And no surprise, he still is up there with the high posters number wise, which is rather nice.
He's one car guy I would have liked to have met.

Although I never met Hillar personally, I valued his opinions (both automotive and otherwise), and felt that I knew him at least a little. (I think I may have talked to him once in the 90s about a wagon he had for sale; if it was him he was straight up about the problems I would have been buying).

I last talked to Hillar by PM on new year's day last year. He said he had a bad flu and would respond when he was feeling better. I never imagined that I would not have been talking to him again.

Agree with Todd - the site has not been the same without him. He truly has been missed here.

We who met him, are better people, because of him...

Lets tell, as many as we can, about him, and act like he would... Amen

I had the privilege of knowing him personally and can assure you all that he was a true original, genuine mad man, single malt officianado and carguy through and through.  I only hope he didn't talk too much at the pearly gates...St. Pete would send him off to the silent room.smile

I used to go to the Carlisle, PA swap meets with him about 10 years ago and enjoyed the trips and stories. Even though I hadn't spoken with him lately, I miss him. He was a true Pontiac enthusiast.

Your spirit is still with us.

There are always people who's path never got to cross your own and you are left feeling like you you truly missed out on something.

I think Hillar is one of those people.

Hey DrCAS I like your tag quote "Things work out best for the people who make the best of the way things work out." - Art Linkletter Especially fitting for this site considering that AL was also Canadian made. (Moose Jaw Sask, I believe?)

Hi Ray, I was not in contact with Hillar for many years as I was busy with family so my hobby was put on hold. I remember Hillar with his paperboy bag as we walked thru the miles of parts at Carlisle. Once while returning from Carlisle in my Malibu wagon, we had a hood that Hillar had bought tied to the roof rack of my car. There was a wild storm with high winds and the wind ripped the roof rack off my car with the hood still attached. The roof rack and hood landed in a soft muddy farmers field. We had to leave it there and Hillar went back the next day with Mark Hodge and his truck to retrieve it. Oddly there was no damage to the hood or the roof rack. At one point, he owned about 7 cars but I don't know if he still had them. I also owned a 1972 Lemans Sport 455 convertible like Hillars (1 of 36 built), but I sold it about 6 years ago.

Pete
