Took my test in Dad's 68 laurentian. Also passed first time. Then, 2 hours later, I was stupidly racing some guy, (I said stupid!!!) lost control of the car and wiped out the right side of the car from the rear door back while trying to negotiate through a single lane bridge.
Had nightmares for years after that. Stupid Kid!!!!!!!!!!!!

My Dad's brand new '76 Dodge Aspen. I passed first try. It was the first time I successfully parallel parked without any real effort. I was totally shocked ... I was backing in, and next thing you know, the tester was opening up the door saying "excellent" that "both tires are 3" from the curb"! How did I do that?shocked.gif

Passed mine in a big boat. Oops, I meant 82 Buick Park Avenue 2dr. Not exactly the easiest for the parallel parking but I managed.

As a reward for passing, my father gave me his 67 Beaumont SD396 with a 4 speed for the rest of the day. CRAZY DAD! It only took about 3hrs for me to meet my first RCMP officer. I had a couple friends with me and of course I had to show them how much rubber the Beaumont would lay. All was well until a police car turns onto the street we are on and there is no mistaking the tire smoke rolling out the back end. Once stopped, the officer approachs the window and says "Where in the hell did you learn to drive like that?" My reply was "Ummmm, on the farm."
I guess he was a little impressed with the driving skills because when he came back to the window, all he had with him was a warning paper. He proceeded to let me know that I wouldn't have a license very long at the rate I was going. SMARTEN UP SON!

Dang that was a close one!

Pete I know that area very well as I was raised in the Beaches!  Bingham Ave!  Almost same scenario, my mom wanted me to take driving lessons through Beach Driving School, but my dad said I was good enough to take my test, as I also had been driving on country roads in the Pickering area, as soon as my legs were long enough to work clutch, brake and gas which was about age 14! He was right!!!!

1969 VW type 3 fastback in 1974; 3 weeks to the day after my 17th birthday, first try.
Kids can get their license at 16 here now; my son just got his in December, but unlike in my time with extensive driver training, restricted driving in the first year, etc.

The same car I took my Driver's Ed classes in, 74 Torino 2 door.

There is a strange twist to the story with that car.

In Driver's Ed, they told us that statistics say that one person out of our class of 19 people would die in a car accident before the age of 20. I was 16 at that time.

That car was sold privately after Driver's Ed to a local family. The day before my 19th birthday, one of my Driver's Ed classmates as well as my best friend at the time were killed when the classmate hit the shoulder on a curve and rolled the car. They both flew out (no seat belts on) and the rear seat passenger still went home and slept in his own bed that night.

Back then you would get a Beginners License that was good for a year. You just wrote a test to get it. With a beginners you had to drive with a licensed person. I got lots of practice as my dad got sick not long after and I drove my mom back and for th to the hospital in our 77 LeMans. I took drivers ed the following Spring. I still remember the instructor. He was a fellow named Curt. A good guy. I still remember him saying "S.M.O.G left" Smog- Signal, Mirror, (look) Over shoulder, Go! I took those lessons and my driving test in an Aries K Car. It was a good car to learn in. He had good advice about using on ramps. "Get up to the highway speed as fast as possible" I remember him putting his foot on mine to get that K car up to speed! Today I get so frustrated at people doing 60kmh on 401 on ramps!

The driving test consisted of a closed course test. If you did ok there you'd drive in actual traffic. I remember after the closed course the tester saying to me "You did ok there, don't screw up now!"

Took mine on Dad's 53 Chev std. Passed first time.
Daughter showed up for her test, did the inside part, then went outside with the evaluator. When asked which vehicle she was using she pointed to the extended cab pickup. Evaluator " we don't get many of those ". She passed.

Have to believe one of the problems is that people find the smallest car possible to use for their test but have no clue when put into a bigger vehicle.

'62 BUG!  First time, with a couple of burps. "But, I  Gotta pass, need licence for work!"

That little beetle went everywhere, hunting machine (toss the deer onna roof to get home), fishing machine (hit the creek fast enough, this thing floats!), and dating machine (hmmm what back seat?)
