65 beaumont rims/tires required... looking for input

well.. I took the plunge and bought a set of 14" rallys with tires from a great guy.  turns out they wont fit though, due to the caliper being in the way.. so..
I'll be selling them now I guess.  they're stock 68 rallys.. 14x6 I think.. maybe 7.. but I'm not sure. without taking the rubber off I guess.

anyone have 14" rally's that fit the disc brake system?  there should be such an animal... shouldnt there be?

thanks in advance

kelly

I understood that stock GM 14" rally wheels would clear stock disc brakes; are your brakes GM or aftermarket?

after market of course..
I may have to go with the 15's... which bites.. I'd really like to use the original spinner caps for shows... without having to have 2 sets of wheels/tires..

I'll keep lookin'

Oh wow. I too thought that all rally wheels cleared disc brakes. How close is it? Any hope of a tiny bit of touch up on the caliper with a grinder? I've seen that done before.

Wow, I've learned something new today. I would have bet money that there was no such thing as a rally that didn't clear disc brakes on an A body.

I learned the hard way about 14" rallys on a 4 piston disc brake caliper from a 68 Parisienne though...

Which one fits? First the left and then the right?

Most companies sell kits that fit the 14" wheels (they are not as popular as the larger set)...I'd call Groundup or someone who sells the kit for the 14" rims and see what different parts you need to retrofit yours. You will probably need new caliper brackets and rotors, maybe different calipers too, the oem ones are tighter fitting to the rotor than aftermarket ones... worth it compared to two set of wheels... and you're old stuff is marketable...

You may also want to try wheelvintiques to see if they sell a 14" rally compatible with aftermarket discs....

ak

ps Carl, i think your info 'was' right, that 14" rallys fit discs, but only oem vintage disc brakes...the new aftermarket ones use common parts that only fit 15" or larger...

Just a side comment...With regards to Pontiac Ralley II's, I recall a thread that made reference to the stamped codes and how they applied to either drums or disc's...

I went 15" to fit, from wheel vintiques. They pass for collector plates.

""CARL... #1 fits everthing # 2 only drum brakes or rear of disc brake cars lol""

I was waiting for the wheel expert to chime in....

I have original 15 x 5, 15 x 6 , 15 x 7 , and 15 x 8 . all GM wheels ralleys,, I 've never had a set of 14" ...seems odd....

I even have a pair 15 x 7 68 vette wheels that have the deep offset and only are a 7" wheel. great for running a tall tire and have it look fat on the rim and still get the offset ...

thanks everyone.. this helps a ton.
Heres a shot of one of the rims (and yes they are all the same, as I thought there may be a chance they werent)

looks like the right style according to the info.. but it's probably the caliper that is boning me. go figure.. one thing after another with this car.. it's been a fight the ENTIRE way.

After making a 14" rally wheel in 67 for disc brakes they make a new one that won't fit discsno ......kinda dumb. I'm glad I read this thread because I didn't know that.

All afternmarket companies will tell you the same. I bought disc brakes for my 67 and I was assured they would fit no problem...

Guess what......they didn't clear my rims either.  I have some wheel spacers that bring the rims out far enough to clear the calipers if you are interested in them.
I chose to go with 15 inch rims instead.

When I called them back to say they would not clear my rims as promised , the reply was ....oh we were unaware of that. We have always been under the assumption that the disc brakes fit all vehicles.
When you order aftermarket brakes ....the kits are basically universal for Pontiacs or Fords or whatever, and are not made vehicle specific.
