Anyone ever use vehicle history reports? Carfax?
Permalink Closed

I am looking at another car for my son tonight. His current choice is a 2005 Dodge Magnum. I havent seen it in person (view tonight), and that usually is the only way to put a value. Do you think the carfax reports are worth $40?  I suppose if turns up fraud its worth it, and if it finds nothing, it isnt. Opinions?

I have used "car fax" and usually like to have them for future..

On cars I have bought in US  they are good protection, if Car Fax says it good, they guarantee it...

If you are buying a Mopar locally  your dealer can run a check on it for you..   Todd did for me, when I was buyng Sub. in 08

I tried a dealer first.....they said that they would only do it for the owner. I would have to ask the seller for it. I'll probably run one just for peace-of-mind and rely on my keen eye ;).  I did spot  the extra 2 doors this time.

lol about the xtra 2drs! i,ve been looking at buying a magnum for a while now. $5500. and 116k is a pretty good price, thats about $1500-$2000 under the regular prices they,re selling for. if it was in my area, and if i found it before you, it would be my new daily driver.

Probably worth the $40 if you're serious. A freebie I use to research a vehicle like that is to call the service department with the VIN and ask them for some info on the car, they can tell you where it was sold, if maintained at a dealership and what recalls were done on it...

My friend hard a hard time selling his S2000 that he bought in the states because the state he bought it in has a "lemon law" which allows the buyer to return a car to the dealership within a certain timeframe... a person bought his car new from Honda, decided within the week that they didn't want a standard trans and returned it, paying a depreciation penalty... but now his carfax permanently reads "Lemon"!!lol

I decided to run a CarFax on my 2010 Camaro SS  and I bought a group of 5 instead of one!  El Stupido..
I was pleased to get another piece of history on my car..  It was a show car and built Jan 15th 09 (approx)
and licenced Mar 30-09  Car fax May 2010 and 17,460 when I bought it Sept 10-10
Anyway I have 4 more reports in the package...      PM your VIN and I will run it and e-mail it to you   C2

hmm.....never got any pm's or emails?  Wow, you guys are nice....I should have posted it a day earlier. I did end up getting a report, and I bought the car. Got it for less than the $5500 asked, but not by a whole lot. It is way better than expected. I happened to run into another meticulous car collector who used this as his driver. He just bought a new one, and was offered $5500 for trade in value, he was upset with that offer, and stated that if that is all its worth, apparently he'd rather someone else have it than a dealer flip it. Strange logic. Its loaded, the leather interior is excellent. In fact the only thing wrong with the car (that I found) is the slight salmon smell mixed with pine tree scent. He works for, or owns a salmon hatchery. Its funny, because I mentioned to my wife that  I wasnt optimistic about the car, as something was fishy about the price/mileage before I had seen it. The previous owner says has a 70's Pontiac with less than 1000 original miles, apparently stored since 6 weeks after original purchase. He wouldnt elaborate no matter how much I asked.....he did say that it was #9 off the line. He also has an antique firetruck, so we hit it off well. He has a fleet of collector cars and trucks. He is very clean, organized and meticulous with the care of his cars. It sure helps when entering into a deal, when you like the person. The black with slight tint in the glass looks great to me, I'll post pics once we have a nice day. Its tight, clean, no rattles. It fits a large man well, and drives so smooth, you cant tell that its running at idle. I tried to think of a good reason to find my son another car and keep this one for myself. He knows dad looked close at Magnums over the years, so I think I planted the seed of liking this car. Thank you for the offers! Only CP'ers would do that. Now the downside.....the wife is not impressed you the young fella driving a nicer car than her. I drive a pos neon, but she quickly reminded me of what I dropped for the Beaumont. Sooo, I will be buying my first brand new car within 30 days. It will be great for her to have bumper to bumper warranty, because I am always fixing multiple vehicles. My son is paying for the Magnum, and the wife wants an economy car, so its not as bad as it sounds, and it give me great ammo for convincing her that we need the 30x80 shop that I've been looking at!

34 mpg....thats impressive. I've got a feeling that your idea of an economy car is not the same as mine. I dont even want to say what model she wants.
