Canada Customs Question

I purchased a number of items from the U.S and since the value of the goods is over $1600 cdn, it is being held until I can produce a "Release on Minimum documentation Package (RMD). I have 30 days to do this or they will destroy the items! Anyone have any clue what an RMD is? I searched the customs website but haven't had any luck on how to do this. I'll try a phone call to them tomorrow. The fun never ends! disbelief

Hey Todd i assume that you dont have a bill of sale is that correct? Are the items new or used because customs needs a number so that a tax calculation can be put through.

I've read all those links-non of them tell me how to go about getting an RMD. The letter from customs has a value on it. They are new goods.
Here's what the letter states:
"In order to obtain release of these goods, please submit either your Release on Minimum Documentation (RMD) package, your Electronic RMD transaction or your fully completed accounting package with payment to your nearest customs office."

When I imported my BBC, I thought that I would be able to deal with the importation by myself. I went to the Customs office and they gave me the necessary documents and instructions. I spent 10 minutes studying the cr@p and called my customs broker to deal with it.

How do you know that Carl? If he ships by USPS I assume he will. If it's UPS they will deal with the brokerage.

If you go to the customs office and let them know this is a personal shipment and not for resale, they should assist you in paying the required tax and getting your goods released. It has been flagged as though it is a business shipment which requires someone (broker) other than customs officers to fill out the paperwork.

It's actually for my part time business so it looks like I'm going to have to deal with the red tape. I'd use a broker if I knew how to get one. Since the package is already sitting at the customs mail depot, do I just call a broker and have them deal with it from there?

I found a broker in London and will give them a call. I think this might be the best way to go even though it will be another expense.. Wish me luck!

Todd, A broker is your best bet for this size of shipment. There are several in the phone book. This is the electronic age and the rule s have changes greatly over the last few years. As a commercial importer we must use a broker, have bar codes for each individual shipment, submit our paper work hours in advance of importation, plus other requrements. All costs that have to be recovered in the selling price.

A while back I ordered a bunch of parts from the US and since I was getting them shipped to my business address I put them in the business name.
That was a HUGE mistake it took a bunch of phone calls and some extra money to get my parts.

I called a broker this morning. He said for a one time shipment like this I should try to clear things myself. So, I called the info line at customs. I nice lady told me I could go to the London Airport to have my item cleared. She said I needed my invoice and the letter I received. To make sure there wasn't anything else needed she transfered me to customs at London Airport. I got another nice lady who said that they could clear it and to bring my invoice and the letter and they would walk me through the forms. She then said "You do have a customs business number right?". Nope. She then gave me the 1-800 number to call to get a customs #. I called it (in between looking after customers at work) and a nice guy named Sonny had me a number in about 5 minutes. So, I've booked tomorrow off and am heading to the airport in the morning. Wish me luck! Bureaucratic crap like this really stresses me out.

The highest dollar amount I`ve brought in is $1800. I was asked if it was for buisness or personal. I said for me and paid the taxes only

I just got back from the customs office. Basically you sit down at a computer and fill out a form. The customs agent helped me out. They processed it and collected GST. Pretty painless. Now hopefully my package will arrive in a couple of days!

Worry is like a distant hill, you see against the sky.
You wonder how, you ever will, get up a hill so high.
But when you reach the top, you''ll find.
The staiway was not as steep and slippery
As you pictured in you mind...

And if you trip and fall when you reach the top you will get to the bottom a lot faster than it took to reach the top!
