4 SPEED DILEMMA

I need advice concerning 4 speed standard transmissions. In my 69 Acadian I had a M21 now it worked just fine, but what I would like to know is what can take a lickin and keep on tickin. I found a rebuilt Borg Warner T-10, and I can remember a friend of mine had a Super T-10 in his 67 Camaro. I did have a Saginaw but I read that they won't stand up to much abuse. If you have big power but yet want to be able to drive the car on runs and such around the country should I be looking at something with more gears ?

Muncie, super t-10 both good trannys. You can build them to almost bullitproof standards. Saganaw is junk. In my experiances, Had both muncie m 22 and a st-10 in high horse mills, no problems. Saganaw in a 350 ss chevelle, pretty much stock, blew it to pieces. Just my 2 cents though.

I HAVEN'T HAD ANY LUCK WITH SAGINAWS. THEY MAY BE FINE BEHIND A STOCK 305, BUT THEY DON'T TAKE MUCH HORSEPOWER OR TORQUE.twocents.gif

I remember when I was young and stupid with hardly any money, I had a 72 Nova SS with a 4 speed. When the tranny went out, I went to the wreckers and got a Saginaw (out of a Vega), bolted right in. Lasted a few weeks, got another one, usually $20-$30 at the time. Junk, no good for anything bigger than a six unless it was a 307. My 2 cents.

That Kiesler 5 speed is the way to go. You can buy them for 3 different horse power ranges and you don`t have to cut the hump

CRAZY J WROTE:

What are these transmissions worth ,and are they used in a production made vehicle or are they an aftermarket piece ?

I saw Saginaws last 60,000 miles in a 327-275 horse and a 396 Novas

These were the days that tires were skinny bias bly, or wide 4 ply nylon (like Mickey Thompsons....
and I always believed that you could not hurt the trans or rear as long as tires were spinning....

Fast forward 40 years and the tires today "will hook"  AND break parts .....
If you go 5 speed or 6 speed  you have a lot more choices

Picture this---  1967---
Jack McMichael 6'5" 270lbs.. ordered a Red with black guts 440 GTX HT   standard tire  775-14   2.5inchs wide...   Jack could power shift that  old "Inland" shifter" ...  and 100mph was a squealing pair of skinnies into 4 gear   He burned them off in 2 weeks and bought some "BIG" F70-14 red lines...

My 66 426-425 Corvette  3:55 gears P225/75R-15 Yokohamma radials on 8 inch rallies ...  Pop the clutch and it would just sit there spinning...  you could almost get out, and walk around it  lol
Roll along about about 30mph--  stand on it, and it was gone!! 85 in second 115 in third  149 on the speedo top end...   10 mpg at 100 mph...   rocket ship..  Side pipes making the best sound in the world..   Pull up behind a car at 50 mph..  peek out!  car coming!!   pull out, and go anyway....

You could also go with an Autogear supercase muncie. I just took mine out of the car, going 5 speed for the overdrive. I had my M22W behind my 406 and for the last year behind the 496. No complaints from tranny .

We put a Saginaw in my buddies el camino a few years back. He had a 350 small block, probably about 350hp. It lasted a week with him banging the gears

big talk about this on the Chevelle site, most guys say an original M22 is stronger than a S-T10 but hard to say as all muncies are now old stuff. They do make all new gearsets though now so rebuilding is a great option and they are getting cheaper with all the 5spd stuff coming in....

Saginaw, junk. My bro bought a brand new Phoenix in 79 from Kipp Scott, with a 305 and it still bent the gears bad in the Saginaw doin the powershift thing.... my2bits...

Rebuild the muncie and abuse it, have 2 years on mine with no issues. cost me 400 bucks to rebuilt it myself. Just did up a m20 to try and get the lower 1st gear. Replaced all syncro's, all bearings, seals, gaskets, 2 reverse gears. Lots of stuff out there, can even upgrade to a supercase, thicker front bearing plate on the front of case allow the use of 4mm thicker front bearing.

Now assuming these transmisions are in good shape, what are they worth ? I found T-10's for as high as $1500.00. A super T-10 for $1100.00. What is a T-5 out of a Camaro, any good ? What's a Muncie worth, when I buy something I don't want to be taken to the cleaners.

$1500 for a T10 is too much in my opinion. A few bucks more and you can get an Autogear muncie

this is a t10 a super t10 has a full aluminum case i believe while a t10 has a combo cast/alum case as this one does a super t10 is stronger than a t10 supers are usually found in trans ams andz28s mid to late 70s and early 80s. A super has a fine spline input,t10 has coarse.T10s are not worth 1500,maybe for a super but not a t10

If you go to a S T10 get the cast case, seen the aluminums split in half. I don't ever remember anyone saying they split a muncie case like that

The t-5 is no good, the world class t-5 is a good road race tranny, neither is good for more than a stock 305 tune prt, maybe 300 horse with the wc tops.

I have a super T10 Borg Warner in my 66 Canso SD, excellent trans, very tough. I think the old logo for BW was "shift as hard as you want but don't break your arm". Good clean used ones around $500-$600, lots of them after Muncies ended in 1973!
