T5 opinion's

checked back topics but not much on this. I was going to put a T5 in the 52,BUT after much reading of site & articles,I'm starting to think "best spend a little more & not worry" All the T5's so far have been the non W/C that are "fur sail" & the sellers all want big bucks for a tranny that likely won't last 1 hard shift??? I've been in contact with SUMMIT again!! They have a Tremec 5 spd for $2095.00 or a kit w/ cross member. poly mount, speedo cable etc for$ 2695.00 i DIDN'T THINK THIS WAS TOO BAD for a new 5spd. but will have to go for ROAD TRIP Can you get the same deal up here,I haven't yet called the local Karbelt, & "won't deal" with Performance Improvements in Oshawa[ bad experience there] I'm going to be running somewhere around 350 to 375 HP [dualquads, stiff cam, head & bottom end work & will likely "Abuse" this on occassion!!!! did I say that out loud?/ Don't think the T5 is what I want if you have to worry all the time it might "gernade" Any comments??????????smilesmilesmilesmile

I'd stay away from a T5 considering that GM would only put them behind a 305. If you wanted a 350 in an F-body, you had to settle for an automatic. You are much better off spending a little more for something like a Tremac or a Keisler 5 speed. I'd lean towards the new Keisler as they have a great torque rating. Check out the link.  Good luck with your shopping Pete.

Spend the money and buy the best

You will forget what it cost in 5 years

under 3000.00 is only 5-6 maple leaf games

and you have nothing left after watching them

Karbelt can do it for $2500 w/shifter + taxes. Can't do the Summit trip for the difference + I don't have to worry about getting it across the border, cause I'll be "WAY" over my limit even though I'm heading back to West Virginia in Apr. for a retirement party for my friend down there!!!  Think I'll " bite the bullet" & go for it. I don't want to be changing tranny's often & I'm "bound" to get on on once or twice[ maybe more] Thanks guys. Pete

Look for a 6 speed out of a wrecked corvette. Relativley cheap, won't detonate easily. Did you talk to the guy with the wc?

No I didn't, after finding out that these things won't hold any power & break at a hat drop, I started thinking better not go through all that trouble & gernade it on 1st powershift!!!!!

The wc t-5 is a good road race tranny, but as I said earlier, no more than 300-350 horses.

Half the problem with the shifting problems is that the stock shifters suck. They do. Really. they are sloppy and it is really easy to miss a shift and jam something up that isn't supposed to be. An aftermarket shifter is an excellent investment. Worth every penny.

I would be interested to know how many people who trashed the T-5 actually own or owned one? I run into that BS over at some other boards I go to.

Want to know why I was told I can't put a stick shift behind my Buick turbo motor? Because some assclown on the Turbo Buick site says, "If GM thought it was a good idea then they would have done it in the GN's". Oh really? Maybe the stick wasn't offered because they dropped the stick option after the first year of the second generation Regals... Like two years before they even offered the turbo option. Nah, that had nothing to do with it, right?

As far as the T-5 behind Camaro 350 V-8's, I am willing to bet dollars to donuts (muffins for the tree hugging types) that is was more to do with emissions than it was longevity. The 350's back then weren't cranking out crap for horsepower and torque.

I have buddies down here and in NY that have T-5's in their rides, beat the crap out of them (because they can), and yet I know only one failure out of seven. The one that puked was out of an S-10 and Gary put Mobil One gear oil in it and doing tire shredding burnouts..

I just bought a used rebuilt (700 miles) T-5 WC out of a Mustang. I bought a B-O-P scattershield with the Ford bolt pattern, a Pro Billet shifter, a flywheel, a clutch, and a cable clutch set up for $850.00. I am going to have no problem using this transmission in behind my turbo motor. i will not be losing slept nor will it stop me from hopping on it once in awhile.

I did my homework. I read everyone's opinion. I talked to transmission guys that I know. I talked to street rod and race car builders. They all basically told me the same thing. As long as I wasn't pulling four to five grand holeshots, it was a WC type, and I used a different shifter, I will have no problems.
