Canada to send six CF-18s for Libya 'no-fly' mission

Canada will contribute six CF-18 fighter jets to help enforce a no-fly zone in Libya, sources have told CTV News.

"The Canadian government has made the decision late today that Canada will send six CF-18 fighter jets to join the Americans, the British and the French and other countries that will participate in imposing a no-fly zone," CTV's Ottawa Bureau Chief Robert Fife reported Thursday.

 

 

 

The jets will be based out of Italy and could be there as soon as Friday.

After weeks of speculation the UN Security Council has moved to "establish a ban on all flights in the airspace" in the North African country and authorized "all necessary measures" to protect civilians, according to the draft version of a resolution.

The resolution also demanded an immediate ceasefire and called on Gadhafi to "take all measures to protect civilians and meet their basic needs."

Word of the resolution was greeted by celebrations in the rebel-held town of Benghazi. The UN vote came shortly after Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi warned of a massive military offensive on the town

Yes, since first deployment in 1982 they have undergone at least two Incremental Modernization upgrades and are fully compatible with NORAD and NATO equipment and communications and can capably fight along side our allies. They fulfill a key Interceptor role and Combat Patrol role. Sometimes they even have to escort Ivan back home as shown below.

The CF-18 is scheduled to be in service until 2020 and stating in 2016 will be replaced by the F-35 stealth fighter developed in cooperation with many of out allies.

I listened to that as well, he mentioned England & France as going in as "Allies" but no mention of Canada !!!  As ususual?????  We are forgotten

Ya you are right Pete, he didn't mention Canada. It is especially poor on their part. besides 6 CF-18's we sent two C-17 Globemasters with 150 personnel and equipment to support the mission. HMCS Charlettown is already there operating within the USS Harry S. Truman Carrier Srike Group. Not confirmed but belived to be deployed was JTF2.

They have taken out the air defense systems , anti aircraft and communications. This will make it a lot easier for fighter attacks on armour and troops. Libya's Airforce uses 1970 vintage MIG 23's - not sure how well they can stack up against  Mirage, Rafale, Hornet and Typhon fighters.
