I was doing some Google searches on my last name and came across a site that listed some descendants of my family (father's side). Low and behold it turns out my great, great, great (!) grandfather is buried in a rural cemetary about 15 minutes from my house. It turns out he and his wife moved to the area in 1834, coming from Henrietta, Monroe County, New York. My son and I took a trip to the cemetary today and we found several family plots. It was amazing to see this many distant relatives buried so close to where I currently live!
The site had such good information that I was able to determine that a lot of my distant relatives had a real tough go of it. It seems my great, great Uncle lost five of his kids in one year (1876)! I was able to find three of those children's graves. Unfortunately the cause of death isn't listed. Pretty sad...
That is very interesting Todd. I recently found out something I hadn't known about by Grandmother while searching marriage records in Toronto. I had always known her maiden name to be Carmichael but in realty it was Imrie. Of course there is a story to that but it is facinating doing the family tree searches.
The site link is http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com. A fellow set up a bunch of webpages on a number of different names. For some reason my last name was one he researched. I've emailed him looking for more info. No response yet..
