little 2-stroke engine questions

So I can get a 50 yr. old v-8 to run but i cant get this little moped engine to fire up!! LOL!   Now, i do have a good spark and the lights come on when i peddle it but it just wont fire up. Ive tried putting a bit of gas down the sparkplug hole but still nothing. The one thing i was thinking is if there is too much 2-stroke oil in the fuel will it not fire??? Any thoughts?

So you tested the spark with the plug removed and the spark at the electrode was good?

They always say it has to run if you have fuel, spark and compression. If you have spark at the plug, a little bit of fuel in the cylinder, and you have compression, it HAS to work!

What if you tried a little bit of unmixed gas just to see if it fires? That little bit without oil in it can't hurt.

yes, i did have spark with the plug out, nice blue hue. I will try the unmixed gas for sure. Should just do the finger in the spark plug hole test for the compression test? It is a 34 yr old engine but i did put new rings in it and it was really clean inside so it should still work fine.....i hope so because it took me 3 yrs to finally restore it for the wife!! LOL!

I would think if you don't have a gauge that the finger in the plug hole would at least give you an idea.

So it hasn't run since the rebuild?

If the oil/gas  mix has too much oil it will tend to muck up the combustion process and the plug tends to oil foul too easy. If that is not it i would look at your carb. By the way did you use fresh gas and not the stuff that was in there from last summer. Cheers. George.

Does it have points or magneto? If they are old points run a thin file through

them or fine grit sand paper check for correct gap

gap only has to be out a bit for it not to run

File and correct gap, another excellent point but you said you already checked for spark. Lets all know how you made out. Cheers. George.

it has points and i did clean them, i have to find some info on the gap. Its a 1976 Cimatti city bike and i have no idea when it was ran last. I am going to try the gas thing tomorrow when i get some more gas. I have never even been on a moped so its been a learning experience just finding out how this thing works!! Thanks for the non-pontiac info guys!! If i get it running my wife will be happy.

Give it a quick shot of quick start to see if it fires off, then check for fuel obstruction if it doesn't fire off after that on gas

As below if its had any bit of old gas sitting in the carb the jets will be plugged up,(make sure the fuel pet**** is in on position?) its usually the simple things with small engines.

thanks 72 endurawagon!! but i did find a place to get the jets and a new needle valve so i should be good. I cleaned it again and blew some compressed air though it and all the passage ways are clear so i just need a new jet and needle and also do a compression test. thx again!!
