Sad.....more common than one might think. Dont let it be you!
A 20 year-old man died Tuesday evening after the car he was working on in his garage fell on top of him.
The man was rushed to Sunnybrook hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said.
The mishap occurred at a residence on Princess Margaret Blvd. near Kipling Ave. in the citys west end shortly after 6 p.m.
Minutes later, an ambulance that was responding to that same call for help was involved in a head-on crash in the nearby intersection of Royal York Rd. and Eglinton Ave. W.
(another report stated he was 18 yrs old, and found under a red Honda Civic.)
At my old house the mechanic across the street had his wife s van jacked up changing the fuel filter on his sloped driveway. No block no stands just his hydralic jack- I didn t get much positive response suggesting stands and bracing the wheels with a block
That's one thing I am very conscious about. I never go under without secure stands and a spotter. I tell 65camino who lives a couple of blocks away the same, call me anytime and I come over and he returns the favour.
My wife and I herad it on the 11 o'clock news and thought how tragic and sad.
I ALWAYS USE JACK STANDS. I ALSO SLIDE A COUPLE OF OLD RIMS AND TIRES UNDER SO IF THE CAR SLIPPED OR THE STANDS WERE TO FAIL THERE IS SOMETHING TO CATCH THE CAR BEFORE IT FLATTENS ME LIKE A PANCAKE. A FELLOW MY SISTER DATED LOST HIS DAD TO A TRUCK FALLING ON HIM. MEL WAS VERY YOUNG AT THE TIME HELPING DAD CHANGE OIL IN THE TRUCK. THEY GOT CALLED IN FOR DINNER. HIS DAD SENT HIM IN AND TOLD HIM TO TELL MOM, DAD WOULD BE RIGHT IN. 10 MINUTES LATER SHE WENT TO CHECK ON HIM AND HE WAS DEAD. TRUCK HAD FALLEN ON HIM.
Still can't for the life of me figure out why people wont use jack stands. Go sky diving without a chute, no? Same thing in my book. So sad, hate to hear about this stuff.
That photo has to be taken in South America. When I was down there this was a common sight to see guys working on cars at the side of the road like that.
When i put the ladder bar suspension in my 63 i welded the bottom of the stands to the car dollies and welded the frame to the stands. hows that for safe. i too won't get under without secure stands and sometimes i throw something under for reassurance, who cares if i damage the car, i can weld it back together.
There was a young fellow about 24 or so working underneath/beside his jacked up Ford ranger on a steep driveway...........(you know how the rest goes, but I'll share it anyway). He must have jarred it or banged it and whoop....out slips the jack, pops outta gear (if he had it in gear?). It ran over his leg (breaking it).....went right down the driveway onto one of our busiest streets in town. I'm talking steep driveway, about 100 ft long.......right across the street, through the fence, over the lawn/bank and landed on a car in the parking lot below. Luckily no one was killed because of this stupidity. Totalled his truck and the car it landed on.
