While stripping my engine of my 1970 Pontiac GTO for a much needed face lift i removed the air conditioner housing from the firewall. The car didn't have the pump installed when i bought it and I think the thing is butt ugly. I don't want to reinstall it. It looks like the heater motor is attached to the housing I removed. Does anybody know if I can purchase a housing from a non a/c unit to my existing firewall? Worst case I plug the holes and go without a heater. After all the car is a going to be a fair weather summer car. Here's some pics.
Mike, I would kill to have factory air in that car. Next to a 4 speed its the coolest thing to see on these old cars. Hook it up and get it running. Just my 2 cents
I Agree with 70S/S Acadian. Leave the air in & get it working. Car ia more valuable & will make it easier to sell when the time comes!!! The 2nd. question out of a buyers mouth is "has it got AIR" 1st has to with $$$$

I have to "plus one" the comments above. I would not remove it unless you never plan to sell the car.
For the record, no, the holes in the firewall are quite different so you would not be able to put on a regular heater box without extensive firewall modification. It's not that tough but a fairly large area of firewall needs to be changed. I did a 70 Skylark firewall (same) years ago to put in a/c.

You don't want air, think it looks ugly, don't need heat, take it out, buy a small piece of sheet metal (that you can easily cut with a tin snips), trace the outline of the A/C unit where it mounts to the firewall on it, including bolt hole locations, cut out a block-off plate, drill holes in it as marked, paint to match firewall, voila "heater delete" car, you can claim such when showing underhood view, eh?
And - SAVE all the pieces, when (if) you go to sell it, you can truthfully advertise "Factory Air" and when asked further say "I have all the pieces, it is disconnected now, it will need to be rebuilt" so you should get the $$$ for "Factory Air" eh?
Happy now, got rid of ugliness under the hood, happy later, sell for the $$$.

Thanks guys. I didn't think about the resale value. I'm going to go with the block off plate, Thanks Dave. I work as a steel fabricator and I can plasma out some gauge plate and make it look mint. I will definitely save all the parts, clean them up, and keep them with the car. I don't plan on selling. but you never know.

Ooooh, plasma cutter beats the $#!t out of my low-buck block-off plate, go for it, and as Kevin (leuger68) sez just roll them windows down and you got FREE AIR eh! (BC being not quite like Florida but still waaaaaaay mild climate)

I take it you don't need a heater or "defroster to get the car inspected??? here in Ontario you have to have "defroster" to pass saftey inspection!!! Then you can take it out,once car has past insp. Never insp. again till new owner has it!!!!!

Nah, no worries, just buy a cheap 12v plug-in-to-lighter-socket clip-on-to-rear-view-mirror fan and you are good to go! (unless of course you aim the fan away from the windshield, eh?)
Or, if BC regs allow you to carry a towel along with, to wipe off inside as needed, even better!

I'm a little late giving an opinion on this but I too would give highest priority to making this literally one of the coolest options on your car. I just think it is so neat when I see this option on these older muscle cars. I don't know if you ever plan on going to Portland or through Washington or up into the Okanagan valley but one trip when it is over a 100 degrees and that air is so paid for and every time after that is just bonus. I've just cooked too often in my life and air is a big plus for me. Good luck with it no matter what you do.
