Is this a big block or small block ? That suffix code shows used on both engines. Was used on 1970 375 HP 396 and also on 72 400 small block.

T0104 CKP

T is engine assy plant Tonawanda  New York

01 Jan

04 4th day

CKP engine sufix code

12117380 would be the last 8 didgets of the cars VIn number

1 year 1971

2 car assy plant St.Therese

117380  last 6 numbers of vin number

And what is wrong with a 400 sbc, they can make same power and more torque than 396.

Is there any websites to get numbers anymore? I used to go to Mortec but it doesn't work anymore.

In the serial # there seems to be one number missing at the end, ckp is a car engine and in 1972 it was a 170hp 400 small block with either a 350 or 400 transmission in a B body.

Hope this helps

Good point, I was decoding with a number missing from the front not the back. That would reflect as a 72 vin not a 71 as I stated and jive with the engine build date of Jan, 4th and ckp suffix code for a 72 400.

1 would now be chevy division

2 would be the year 1972

1 would be Oshawa

17380 would be last 5 numbers but missing the last number

Good catch.

Also remember that 1972 was the first year for rating in NET Hp. You can often find charts with both NET and GROSS Ratings for 1971 cars but generally that 170 NET HP would translate to 250 Gross HP.

Good point Ray, NHRA had to add about 80 to 100 HP on to those net ratings for the Stock and supper stock classes to make it fare back then.

As I remember the early 400 small blocks were all 2 bbl carbs with 4 bolt mains. When the 4 bbl carb became standard issue around 1975 they were 2 bolt mains.

Thanks

Randy

That is right. I have driven a 1970 400 sbc that is in a Pontiac B body, originally a 2bbl single exhaust factory stock car. It was upgraded with an L-48 intake and quadrajet, superb dual exhaust sytem with Petronix ignition. This is one stout powerplant with stump pulling torque and tirefrying power, even with a posi.

The early 400's were for station wagon and Pick-up and Suburban useage where torque was required. In later years once the 454 was dropped they found their way into more cars with 4bbls and of course single exhaust.
