beaumont will not start

hello

i'm just a young girl from BC. I own a 1965 acadian beaumont that my father gave to me before he passed away 2 years ago. i drove it around the summer after he passed away but discovered i was lucky to get it started everytime i tried. now it does not start at all. i put the key in and it just makes a click noise. i've had the the alternator tested and it's good, battery is brand new but curious, could it be the starter? i know nothing about cars but i love this car and want to use it more but don't have a mechanic to trust anymore seeing how my dad was my mechanic. i can get it jump started and it runs beautifully but once it's shut off it won't start again. i need help and advice:)

Hi and welcome here.

It doesn't sound like a starter problem if it starts with a boost. It's possible that you have a bad connection between the cable and the battery or even a bad cable. If the battery and alternator are new or test fine and it goes with a boost, it almost has to be connection or cable.

I once had a problem with a "fuseable link" on a 74 car which I believe caused similar conditions. Would that be possible?...

Hmm...sounds like...battery isnt getting a charge or theres a bad connection if it's new and the alt tests fine.

Car starts off the battery but runs off the alt.  It's not getting enough juice to turn the starter.

If it's a new battery was it put on a charger before being put in the car?? Off the shelf i've seen them have pretty low power.

First thing id do is put the battery on a charger...check the main battery connections and clean them.

I have to agree with Carl on this, Sounds like a poor connection somewhere.

I'm guessing that it's unlikely to be the charge if it's a new battery.
Now that I think about it, I think I had the same problem with my car (a '66) a few years back. I believe there are connections on a block attached to the firewall on the drivers side that I cleaned up, which solved the problem. It seemed that after 40 years, the connection wasn't as clean as it once was which required more juice to possibly arc over the poor connection, which is why it would start with a boost, and not on it's own.  All I did was disconnect the battery, clean up the contacts on the firewall, hook up the battery again, and it worked....

Where in BC are you. I am sure there might be a member that would be willing to assist. I am in Surrey if that might help out. It does sound like a connection problem to me though Possibly right at the battery if you use jumper cables and it starts

check the + cable connection at the starter also at the battery also check ground cable condition and connection on the engine block and to the battery

check charging at 14.1 amps not less

battery condition

check 2 wires at starter solenoid

no fuse links on that car for shure ( unless they been installed after )

thats about it ! ( i seen more complicated situations ) lollllll

a test light would pick this problem off easily, you need a assistant to hold the key over, where you lose power is the culpert, sure sounds like the starter solenoid(no power into the starter itself-thus the clicking sound, the boost is overcoming the resistence)

I wish I was near my car so I could take a picture of the firewall to identify the connection...

I just had a problem with my 65 as well.. turned out to be the indicator light in the dash was burned out.. since it's in parellel with the fuseable link... it wouldnt charge.. changed the bulb..and "wala" it's getting about 14 volts when running, starts everytime now.. but I had the draining battery problem due to the light.. if you can believe it. mechanic buddy (old school buddy and old car guy) remembered running into that problem before.
