Tach installation guidance requested...

I'm happy to say that I've just rcvd a '64 GTO tach that looks to be in good condition, which I am now hoping to transpalnt into my '66 Beaumont.  As a result, I of course have some questions...

The unit did not come with a wiring harness.  Should I be purchasing one from the aftermarket GTO suppliers, or is there an easier/cheaper/quicker solution?

If it does make the most sense to go through someone like NPD, is it a '64 harness that I should be looking for?

Lastly, is there a way to test the tach prior to installation to ensure that it works?

Thanks all.

gw

Geoff, can you please post a picture of the back of the tach?

Ok, I am going by memory.

It seems to me the threaded stud (red plastic insulator behind it) is a fused 12 volt live with the key.

The flat terminal should be a push on wire end that uses a brown wire and it hooks to the negative side of the coil.

I am not sure about the smaller stud but I imagine it's a ground.

I will try to check for a wiring diagram.

Thanks Carl. Any suggestions re which harness to go for? I'm guessing a "64 GTO, or is there a quicker solution without paying duty etc?

Get it mailed directly to you, not courier. A couple of weeks ago I got some parts mailed from the US right to my PO box. No brokerage fee, no duty, "sign here" and go!

I am not positive on that wire hookup. Still looking for info in my books but no luck yet. Don't hook it up that way until someone can confirm that what I have said is correct.

Yeah, mail is the way to go to avoid the fee's. Problem is that many of them will only use couriers. Thanks for the info, we'll see if anyone else chimes in.
Stay dry.

Water's down to normal now. Problem is, now we have a beaver living in our coulee and that is NOT a good thing. Those things put a chain saw to shame.

Hoping that someone might be able to confirm or deny if the following link refer's to the correct harness that I would be looking for? (A '64 GTO tach that is to be installed in a '66 Beaumont dash.)

thx

Hmmmm, I just noticed that the link says "transistorized" which mine is not...

Just wondering, wouldn't you consider just wiring it yourself? One wire to ignition fused, there's a spare spade on your fuse block, one wire to the distributor...(if its an hei there's a spade on the cover marked tach) and a ground...

Just be carefull,if you are running hei, you might have to run a resistor.

Nope, not HEI. Still the factory set up.
Thanks for the feedback Andrew. Having never done one before, that kind of what I was wondering...

Is the resistor because of the older tach? I've had mine wired (as i've described) with both points and hei for over 20 years and no problems... my tach's have been newer aftermarket... I'm cheap, I woudn't spend $50 on a harness that might be a few bucks in wire... In the case of an original points set up, then instead of the 'tach' spade on the hei, i believe you go to the negative side of the coil? I'm sure someone can confirm that...

I'm also thinking the 3 terminals on the back of that tach (although i don't have an original one in my car) are 12v ignition, interior lights, and negative coil. It probably grounds from being mounted in the dash (aftermarket tachs have a 4th ground wire). Hopefully Carl or someone can confirm from a wiring diagram.

Hope this helps a bit! Id test it all from under the hood first and see that it works as expected before mounting in the dash!

I have one of those in my car and it has HEI and no resistor. The problem is the car disassembled right now. There was no wire harness, as what was said above it has one wire from the distributor to the tach and one a 12V power source.
