my 57 is almost restored and I need to go to the Vehicle Inspection before receiving the plate. They want the "title" or what the US name the "title" or registration form with the last licence plate. I 've bought the car in Alberta. I don't know what they exactly want because I have no idea of Alberta laws for a car. If the last owner doesn't have this paper, how to find a copy?
Don't know about Alberta, but here in Ont. you go to the court house & get a "sworn Avidavit" from a judge with all your paper work to get a Ownership for a vehicle with no said ownership, then you have to get the car "appraised" to pay the HST tax. That's why "always" get the car into my name as soon as possible with "low" appraisel, before I start work on it,otherwise you get "nailed" in taxes for finished car. Your lic. office should be able to tell you the procedure out there.

Sorry, but I just see that I forget to say I live in Belgium. In fact, I don't know what and where I could get this "title" or "vehicle registration" if the last owner lost it.
It is really up to authorities in Belgium I guess, but here is a thought. Perhaps someone in Alberta could get a title in their name by going through the affidavit process and then transfer the title/registration to you?
Lots of Alberta guys here so they may correct me but I think Alberta still only uses a bill of sale to transfer ownerships.
Hi, yes we can still transfer ownership of a car/truck on bill of sale here in Alberta to new owner. But that may not be enough (bill of sale) in Beilgium to get new title. If not able to, contact me and I will try to help.

They want a vehicle registration with last plate and owner's name, a paper that follows the car after the sale for a new registration with the new owner..
It's a canadian one. Is there a canadian office for last registration. I only have a fax copy of an older registration in British Columbia from an other owner. Perhaps this paper was sufficient for import but the inspection in Belgium wants an original of the last owner.
Here in Alberta all that is needed is a bill of sale to obtain registration. However you can not get a registration if the vehicle is not Alberta registered until the vehicle passes a very strict "OUT OF PROVINCE INSPECTION"
What Alberta does offer for approx $25.00 is a VIR or "VEHICLE INFORMATION REPORT" which is a document showing the vehicles' Alberta history. However this does not include any owner information or plate # as this would violate privacy laws.
So if you were here in Alberta and your car is still ACTIVE on the Alberta system you could get an Alberta registration in your name with a bill of sale and proof of insurance.
is it possible the car got sold to bc and then not reggyed in alta?If you have good bc reggy info go to ICBC.com and apply for a request of ownership think it 20 bucks you never know....
Sounds to me like you might have to get creative, all you need is a copy of an old alberta registartion and photoshop. Someone here might send one to you in an email.
I find that the easiest way to deal with bureaucracy is to give them what they want.
I once tried to transfer a car in Ontario but the previous owner had not signed the car over to me on the back of the registration. They wouldn't do it without a signature, so I left, went ouside, got a pen and signed it and came back in. Presto car was tarnsferred. That's 100% true.

all we use here in alberta is a bill of sale. The plate stays with the old owner and the new owner gats a new plate when he registers the car.You have to have proof of insurance before you go to register it because they will ask for a bill of sale and proof of insurance before they give you registartion. You can have bill of sale form signed by you and the previous owner,he can just sign the registration on the back and give it to you.Or you can even just write one out on a piece of paper with the vin #,make, model, year.Last owners addy, your addy andsigned by both parties and a witness.the inspection is up to your insurance company and the form varies with each company. If the car is from another province an being rought into alberta it must hae an out of province inspection which is much more involved than the basic one.The basic involves suspension, brakes, horn, lights, tires, wipers, windsheild and major mods fom factory.Pretty simple stuff. If you can get the previous owner to send a copy of the last reistration that would have the plate info, etc on it.I'm not sure exactly how long they keep vehicles in the system,i think about 15 years. There is a way to claim an abondoned vehice but never gone through that yet but i will with the sedan delivery as ithasn't been rgistered since the sixties. There is what they call a title search but not sure how it works.

There is a guy on this site that did that with a car.
I did a search with the word "condoms" and the thread popped right up! I remember he found a lot of condoms in the car.

Maybe you can register the car in Alberta under your name!? Then the registration is up to date, and any questions asked, you are the owner. We used to do that with guys who were not legal driving age (no license) but wanted their vehicle driven to school to work on in shop class so it was ready when they did get their license.

Just a thought
Depending on when the vehicle was previously registered in Alberta, he may need a safety inspection to register the car in Alberta.
I think the issue here is he needs to determine if the vehicle was registered in Alberta after it came here from BC. If it was, he may be able to attain information on that registration.
