loosin some juice?? alternator questions


so,  I go out to start thee ol 64 Custom Sport,, and she's dead.  swap batteries  and off  I go. Odd.. next day ,, same thing with the fresh battery.  Now I start diggin.

Still running the original external reg.

swap the alternator , as it was not charging.

Still not charging.  

tap the reg , still nothing.

 swap the reg ,  now it's charging,  but over charging , up to 15 VDC

it is an aftermarket reg,  I can not open it up to set the charge max.

clean up points in old reg, install ,, now charging , set voltage to 14 VDC,,all good.

 I leave the car for 7 days,  dead again.....

so,, I have a 2.2 amp draw when the car is off,  I disconnected any load ( stereo , alarm ) all is off.  Still 2.2 amps.

I had my daughter watching the meter m and pulled each fuse,  still  stayed at 2.2 amps???

I even pulled the harness off the back of the light switch , if by chance there was an internal short there??

I then pulled the the Field wire off the alt.  and it dropped to 0.4 amps.

so.....I swapped back on the original Alt.   ( this is where I started ...) thinkin something was internally shorting............

still drawing 2.2 amps..??????

I don't want to throw the towel in and install a newer internal Alt.

 

Any thoughts ??  Ideas ???

  There are diodes in the alternator that let power go only one way. If one of these burns out the power can go the other way and will draw a little power from the battery. Take the power wire off the alt. and check with ohm. meter to see if you can get any draw through the alt. If you do then it is a diode , if you  get 0 ohms the alt is good. An easy check.

 no factory ammeter,    I had my fluke meter in series with the main battery cable.

 

I'll check the diodes like suggested ,  see what I have...

power wire off,, measured 240 K ohms from the positive post to ground?

what does this indicate?

the other alt. I have measure in the Meg ohms when I did this ?

      Now switch leads on your meter so red lead is to ground and black is to pos. post on alternator with battery wire disconnected. This way power should not be going through the alt. because it is going backwards. This would indicate a burnt diode. There are more than one, but just one can burn out.
