'64 HT Windshield removal what are the breakage odds?

Some advice please,.

I've asked a few windshield replacement related questions before,.. but didn't really come to a solid consensus.  So ,.. if some of you could offer some advice, please.

I'm once again considering the cracked windshield \ replacement issue with my 64 Parisienne hardtop.  In the last post,.. many advised me to consider the glass shop\straight up replacement.  However,... I phoned many of the places that said they could get one for $350.00 glass only and install around $200.00.  However,.. each time I said,.."go ahead an order it",..I never heard from them again.  Long story short,.. after many attempts,... the bottom line seems that the "real price" always turns out to be $750.00 glass only.  No way I'm paying that on a hobby cruiser.  So I'm no longer entertaining any "new" glass possibilities.

Last week I came across a guy close to home who has one (in a car).  He said,.. $100.00 ,... you break it- you bought it".

So,.. I need some advice from some CP members.,..again.

What are the odds of breaking it when removing ,. realistically. ?? (no smart ass remarks please My skill level ,... I've done plenty of "old school" mechanics",.. no bodywork experience at all.  Secondly ,.. what is the special tool needed for glass trim removal and,... can I use a substitute tool of some sort?  I'm aware that this windshield uses a gasket,.. and I can cut the gasket for removal.  I'm wondering how wedged the windshield might be (from the experience of those who have done it)  and how much force is needed for removal.  Is there a special technique for removing?

When it comes to installation ,.. I'm letting a glass shop do it.

Any advice and opiions would be greatly appreciated.

Take a "sharp" knife & cut the weatherstrip!!!! around the w/shield. You'll need a new one anyway. 2 people one inside pushing out "gently" other person outside pulling!!!! Carefull & good luck!!!

AND don't do it in the heat of the day !!!!!!

just like Carl said, cut the gasket away first. A trick I use is to take a 'G' guitar string for example, after you've cut the gasket as best you can , run the guitar string around, see- sawing your way around the perimeter with 2 of you , one on the inside , one on the outside! This will in ensure that the glass is free before you try and push it out !

should be no fear at this point !

on a a side note, a local fellow here is in the same pickle, local glass shops want up to $1000 for an installed windshield in his 64 4 dr hardtop!!

Wow!  I'm totally into that deal!   PM me your email or contact info and the calendar of coffee nights!

The ones you have are from a 4 DR HT right?  A glass shop told me that a 4 DR hardtop WS is the only one that will fit a 4 DR hardtop car.  4 dr sedans, wagons and 2 dr cars are all different.  Is this accurate?  I think is.  All the other 64 windshields are a bit taller and have a slight curve towards the top.

Offer was certainly appreciated.  However,.. a 2 dr is different.

It's wild ,.the prices are about double of what they are in the US.

By the sounds of the advice,.. I may tackle it.  I've spent a hundred buks in worse way if by chance ot does break.  Do you know if a special tool is required to remove the chrome?

4 Dr. Hardtops are in fact unique. Bought a 4 Dr. HT windshield years ago to install in a ragtop and upper corners are sharper than other types. Had the thing up in the attic for 30 years then threw it away.

Taken out a few sheilds at the auto wreckers....Just take your time and make sure you cut all the way thru the rubber.....If it catches on one spot and your pushing or pulling the windshield, the more chance you have of cracking it. GOOD LUCK
