I am new from London

Well I finally have closed the deal for my 66 Acadian SD. This car was built in the late 70's and early 80,s. Its a 671 blown 383 stroker  with a Art Guilders chassis. I will be bringing her back to life over the next year and maintaining the original new but now nastalgic components.

I was about to ask the same question. "WHY TRY" was a very popular car in London in the 1980's and then it disappeared.

I am a freind of our new member Walter and steered him to this site .Its been tough not to give any info out on this car because walter was putting the deal together and we had to keep it quiet.
Todd this is the iconic WHY TRY car from east London the new owner and myself only lived a few blocks away. The car was a jaw dropper in the day. I will get Walter to give some more details about how the car was built and the story of its purchase.

To start off I sold my soul to get this car. Cashed in RRSP's and have decided to sell my 68 SS Chevelle with a Rehr Morrison 565 to boot.

This Acadian  has been in my hood for 35 years. I saw it being built, and didn't even have my liscence when this car first hit the streets. This car was built by the best people that were available in the 80's. Art Gilders built the chassis, who was a GM designer, plus had a race chassis shop on the side. This was one of the first street cars Gilders built. It was built on the same jiggs and used part of the same design of a drag car he had just finished. The 671 blown 383 was built by Gord Henry and all the body work was done by the guys who now own Fine Touch Automotive.

This car has only 250 miles on it as the owner only drove it ocassionaly. He broke the keyway in the crank and the car was taken off the road in 1989. Many people were after this car through out the 90's and up till now, but it was never for sale. If you tried to approach the owner to buy this car he would literly chase you off his property with or without the shotgun. (your choice) Garage doors were boarded up, multiple locks on the doors to keep people out.

I just happen to ask a freind of mine who lived on the street where this car was, if he knew the owner and if he still had the car. Yes he knew the owner very well and it might be available for sale. Well the first thing I did was, take me over there now....... well we went over, he gave me his price and I bought it right away. The most disgusting thing was, the owner told a couple of people the car might be for sale..they sent a couple people over and they were cutting the car down, and giving him offers of 6 grand. He almost had assult charges against him throwing the guys out of his garage. I hate bottom feeders.....I went through this when I sold my 70 Judge convertible and factory 71 455 Lemenas Convertible about 5 years ago.

It took over three weeks to put the deal together. The owner would not take a deposite so it was so hard to keep this quite, because if the word was out, that, (WHY TRY )was for sale the vultures would come out and steal the car.

And the other cool thing is the owner signed over the rights to me, so the personalized plates WHY TRY stay with the car.

I am starting out by sending the motor to Rossiter racing engines to be freshened up and the crank to be double key wayed. Rossiter is the best blower guy in Canada.

I don't have the money to give this car show quality paint right now, so all I am going to do is go through the mechanicals, touch up the engine bay and again put this car back on the street in primer as it was driven in the 80's

Awesome story Walter. Is Art Guilders from London? If so, is he related to George Gilders? I worked with George at Eastown Chev in the late 80's and I'm sure he had a brother who was into building race cars.

I still want a ride in the shovel before its gone! Congrats on the WHY TRY car. I have pis of it when I was 14 when Andy and I went to cruise night in the 80 Grand Am.....btw....it was one of the fastest street cars back in the day here in London

I don't think you'll be able to register those plates. When I sold my Pontiac the girl at the MTO said I couldn't transfer them to the buyer.
Ahh, that car brings back a lot of memories. Remember the mid 70's Camaro with the wild paint job and "Ultimate Sin" painted on the rear spoiler that used to cruise downtown London? Remember hanging out at Mr.Sub?

Hi Todd I think the guy you worked with was Arts brother.

Anyhow there is a way to transfer the plates into my name. I talked to a MTO person in Toronto and they told me how to do it. I write out a letter stating the original owner gives approval to relingish this plate to, me. We both sign it then this document has to be faxed to a specific number. 416 235-4414

The ministry reviews the letter, approves it then instructs me on how to change the plate into my name. It takes from three to six months to do this, but this is the proceedure to change a personalized plate.
