The Ford GT40 was a high performance sports car and winner of the 24 hours of Le Mans four times in a row, from 1966 to 1969.It is so far the only racecar built in America to win overall at Le Mans.

The GT was produced in model years 2005 and 2006, with the first customers taking delivery in August 2004. The GT began assembly at Mayflower Vehicle Systems in Norwalk, Ohio and was painted by Saleen in their Saleen Special Vehicles facility in Troy, Michigan.

The GT is powered by an engine built at Ford's Romeo Engine Plant in Romeo, Michigan. Installation of the engine and manual transmission along with interior finishing was handled in the SVT building at Ford's Wixom, Michigan plant.

Of the 4,500 GTs originally planned, approximately 100 were to be exported to Europe, starting in late 2005. An additional 200 were destined for sale in Canada.

Approximately 550 were built in 2004, nearly 1,900 in 2005, and just over 1,600 in 2006, for a grand total of 4,038.

The Ford GT features many new and unique technologies, including superplastic-formed aluminum body panels, roll-bonded floor panels, a friction stir welded center tunnel, a "ship-in-a-bottle" gas tank, a capless fuel filler system, one-piece door panels, and an aluminum engine cover with a one-piece carbon-fiber inner panel.

Brakes are four-piston aluminum Brembo calipers with cross-drilled and vented rotors at all four corners. When the rear canopy is opened, the rear suspension components and engine are visible.

The mid-mounted 5.4 L Modular V8 engine is all-aluminum with a Lysholm twin screw-type supercharger. It features a forged rotating assembly housed in an aluminum block designed specifically for the GT program. A dry sump oiling system is employed, allowing the engine to sit low in the car's frame. The DOHC 4-valve heads are a revision of the 2000 Ford Mustang SVT Cobra R cylinder heads (with slightly increased wall casting thickness in the exhaust port). The camshafts have unique specifications, with more lift and duration than those found in the Shelby GT500 or 20032004 Ford Mustang SVT Cobra.

Power output is 550 hp (410 kW; 558 PS) at 6500 rpm and generates 500 ft·lbf (678 N·m) of torque at 3750 rpm.[8] A Ricardo six-speed manual transmission is fitted featuring a helical limited-slip differential.

I've heard they had less than stellar reliability though.

Always wondered if a 6"4" driver could fit comfortably? No need to rush the answer though, as I'll need to win the lottery first.
Beautiful cars!!!

You could ask Jeremy Clarkson (Top Gear) about reliability. He bought one of the first (of the new style) ones out then was publicly critical of the reliability. He got rid of it (or Ford took it back - don't know). But, I think he ended up buying another one. So maybe he just had a lemon, or Ford promised him a free loaner if the second one ever needed servicing or ??

By the way, I think Jeremy Clarkson is about 6' 5".

I tried getting into a Pantera once. Not a hope. I'm 6' 3" and long in the body. I think maximum height for a Pantera must have been about 5' 10".

The GT-40's are a real dream car, but I suspect I'd end up with no driver's license after a very short time. They'd be great fun on the Autobahn or maybe Montana.

Jeremy found that he could not get into an original GT40 and then bought a GT...but it kept breaking down and also he found that it was too wide for certain London traffic-flow pinch points. In the end Ford bought it back off of him with no questions asked.

I thought he'd got rid of it too, but was watching Top Gear the other night and the other guys were giving Jeremy a hard time for buying another GT - after his great experience with the first one.

They are a great looking car and would be a lot of fun  ...  for a short time.

I should have added that Mr Clarkson tested a GT in the US for Top Gear just before they went on sale and was enthusiastic. He was so enthused that he ordered one and was crestfallen when he found that it was too wide for London, had a bad turning circle, and had electrical issues.
